Utah Has a New State Record Typical Elk
December 2nd, 2005 David King - King's Outdoor World
This bull was big news this fall as rumors started flying about a monster typical bull taken with a rifle on the Pahvant here in Utah. This 7×6 bull separates itself from the pack due to its enormous front tines and incredible mass. Early green scores put this bull anywhere from 426 gross, 415 net to 420 gross and 410 net typical B&C. However, talking with the hunter a few weeks ago, Lloyd Jacobson was not quit sure just how the green scores would hold up on his potential state record bull elk.
Well, I am here to announce that Utah officially has a new state record typical bull. In 2003, Brian Gilson took not only the new state record typical elk at the time, but the first 400 net typical bull ever for the state of Utah. Brian’s great 6×6 bull elk scores 414 6/8 gross and 402 4/8 net B&C. However, his great bull has been surpassed in 2005.
Lloyd’s self-guided hunt in South-Central Utah paid off. His bull’s official score after the 60-day mandatory drying period is 421 6/8 gross and 408 4/8 net typical B&C. The bull nicknamed “Iverson” is a 7×6 and has a small abnormal point coming off from the right-side royal point. What a giant!
You want to see more and read more? The full story and many great photos of this record bull elk will be in the pages of an upcoming issue of Hunting Illustrated Magazine.
Are there other bulls bigger that have been taken still? Is this the only record to be broken here in Utah this year? Stay tuned…
