Lloyd Jacobsen with his Utah state record elk scoring 421 6/8 gross and 408 4/8 net typical B&C
Yesterday I had the great opportunity to visit with Lloyd Jacobsen at his home and see first hand his awesome bull elk. It was great to sit down and have Lloyd tell me the story on his great hunt for this bull. It is amazing how many people who saw this bull on the hoof believed he was “only” a 390 class elk. I was able to get some great photos of the antlers as well and you will see Lloyd’s new Utah state record typical elk in the future 2007 King’s Bull Elk Calendar which will be available later this year.
Hunting Illustrated will also be the first place you will find the featured story on this great elk hunt. If you are not a subscriber yet, you better get signed up as Lloyd’s bull will be featured in our upcoming “Best of 2005″ Issue out at the end of March 2006.
One thing that amazed me with this bull is just how big it is. I was able to get a copy of the score sheet. Let me just throw a couple of numbers out to you so you can fully grasp just what I am talking about (I will go into greater detail in a special sidebar in this upcoming featured story in Hunting Illustrated). Lloyd decided to score and enter his bull as a typical. However, there is one abnormal kicker point on the right side that is 5 2/8-inches long that counted as a deduction to his typical score. Did you know that this bull would have also shattered the current state record non-typical as well! The current record is 412 0/8 net non-typical B&C. Lloyd’s bull also scores as a non-typical an amazing 419 0/8 net! Wow, that is something to think about. Either way you score it, it is a new state record. Congratulations Lloyd.

I spent a long time looking at your bull. It is an amazing elk. There isn’t even words for how much I would liked to have been where you were with a tag and gotten that elk myself !!! Congrats on a once in a lifetime trophy bull. – Rich Davis

It’s nice to see someone who has put in their time and waited so long for a chance to kill a trophy animal, get a bull like that. Congratulations Lloyd, you deserve it !

Thanks for sharing that trophy page with us Chris. I don’t know what dream world you are living in but “trophy” elk are not as easy as you make them sound. You abviously have not hunted elk much. As far as black tail are concerned, you’re right, they are a tough trophy to get but not any harder than a trophy mule deer.

In case you’ve never hunted before, blacktails ARE the toughest of all wild game to hunt. They have the best hearing, sight, smell. They are also the smartest and most evolved of the deer family. Blacktail fur tends also tends to change colors to their surroundings.

That is one fantastic bull, you have to be very proud. Also, the guys that say that a bull like this are easy to get are fools that have never hunted for a trophy bull like this one or they wouldnt make a fool out of themselfs by even saying such a stupid thing. Nice job, Wayne

[...] After the 2005 hunting season, Arizona was riding high with their potential world record typical archery bull taken by Shawn Patterson, Utah had a new typical state record at 408 2/8 and Nevada quietly took home the honors of the largest non-typical elk scoring 415 net! There was a lot of excitement heading into the 2006 season, and I wondered just how the elk hunts would fair. Questions loomed in certain parts of the West as to how the drought would affect antler growth and the rut, as well as whether or not Utah could continue its amazing streak of record book bulls. The smoke has cleared, and for the most part many of the big bulls have been scored and brought to the forefront as the 2006 season rolled to an end. [...]

Hey Chris #4… Even if that statement about black tail is true, why would u put that on a post? This is an amazing animal and contrary to your belief, getting close to a big bull like that is near impossible. That is a wonderful trophy and will provide him with a lifetime of joy. Sounds to me your a little bitter and jealous…
