World Record SCI Typical Mule Deer

Jason Gisi and his World Record SCI Typical Mule Deer from Mexico

It has been a little over one year since Jason Gisi brought down this awesome typical mule deer. However, I still get emails about this buck. Some are correct and others are not.

This great mule deer was taken by Jason Gisi in January 2005 in Mexico. We did a feature story on this record buck in our Special Winter Issue of Hunting Illustrated. Because of all of the questions and rumors about this buck, I decided to post the story in our featured stories section from the magazine. You can read the full story about the hunt here.

However, there are still some questions from people due to the “world record” status it now holds and some confusion on the score itself. Let me see if I can clarify this a little more. Jason killed this buck in Mexico on a free ranging, fair chase hunt. The buck is 35-inches wide and was scored using the SCI (Safari Club International) scoring system at 221 3/8 SCI typical. This score surpassed the old record by about an inch. It is the new world record typical desert mule deer for SCI.

The confusion from some people is their correlation between SCI and B&C (Boone and Crockett). This buck is NOT the world record typical mule deer for B&C. The score of 221 3/8 is not a B&C score. Some have assumed that the 221 3/8 would then put it as a possible #2 typical for B&C. Jason Gisi has entered his buck in SCI and now holding that typical record for them. However, it has been scored using the B&C scoring method. The buck scores 215 gross and 206 3/8 net typical B&C. The only reason I state the score here is just to clear up the confusion I am getting from people who don’t fully understand the two scoring systems and differences. Truly an amazing buck!
