What’s Up With Winchester? First Look 2007 Yamaha Grizzly 700

Yamaha ATV Ride in Montana

June 11th, 2006 David King - King's Outdoor World

I am heading out for Missoula, Montana. I have been invited by Yamaha on a special invitation to ride a brand new 2007 utility ATV that is not yet been disclosed. All they tell me is that it is an all new ATV for 2007. However, I have a pretty good idea that it is going to be their new Grizzly ATV. I am taking a guess, but I think it will be an updated Grizzly with a 700 cc engine and EFI (electronic fuel injection) and some other goodies. I am very excited to see what it is it. The Yamaha Grizzly 660 has been an outstanding ATV for the last few years and with the new competition it will be interesting to see what Yamaha has come up with to keep the Grizzly on top as one of the best selling ATVs on the market.

I will be coming back on Tuesday and hopefully on Wednesday I will be able to post probably one of the first sneak peaks to the public of this mystery ATV. Stay tuned…

UPDATE: I just returned from my trip with Yamaha in Montana. What a fun time. Unfortunately since I was one of the first to test ride this new machine, I had to sign a “no disclose” agreement until June 25th at 9pm PST. So I don’t even want to toy with the situation since I signed my life away and devulge any details at this time. I will be posting more details after June 25th.

ANOTHER UPDATE: You can read about the new 2007 ATV here

Will Grizzly 660 owners be happy or sad after 6/25 (i.e. we have been waiting 3 years for a bigger model)? It’s so cruel to post something like this and then clam up.

I’m not sure that I want something bigger. I have an ‘04 Grizz that is pleanty of machine for me. I haven’t gone anywhere yet that the Grizz couldn’t get me too. As a matter of fact it has taken me a couple of places I didn’t want to go.

Even if they kept the 660 engine and added EFI.

I own a 04′ Grizzly and my wife has a 05′ Grizzly and there was significant difference between the two. The 05′ was significantly better then my 04′ and no one could figure it out, so I added a Dynatek CDI, UNI airfilter, power tip, and a jet kit and I am happier, but I am really looking forward to a new Yamaha machine. I am really tired of having the Polaris 600 and 700’s do wheelies and my Grizzly can’t even though in the mud, pulling, and the ride I feel are better then the Polaris’s, but they think they have the machine since theirs can pull a wheelie and neither of my machines can unless I add a clutch kit.

My dealership said they will also know on the 26th and they already asked me what color or camo pattern do I want. They are hearing rumors, but it is being extremely kept quiet. They figure that Yamaha has to release something significant to step over the King Quad, the Outlander 800, the Sportsman 700 & 800, and the Wide Brute 750 so my dealership is guessing it will push the 800 limit, have EFI, and some type of extra features to get the focus back on Yamaha for the next year or two.

They want the ATV of the year title back in the big sport utility class again.

I hope they don’t go over 700 because I think the 660 is a great bike. Those other bigger bikes are too big. I don’t like riding a 1000 lb heep of iron. I have rode my ‘03 with the brute force and polaris and I could out do them 10-fold. Also, I don’t know why you can’t ride a wheelie. My bike is stock with 26″ ITP mud lite tires and I can ride wheelies all day long in high range.

Like I said, I truly believe my 04′ Grizzly is not up to par - I have Titan 589’s with ITP steel rims and a winch and I just can’t get enough rev. to pull the front end up - I get close in low, but not a chance in high range.

They need to keep the weight under 800 lbs and under 800cc to maintain an ATV status, at least in MN - not sure other states restrictions. I really look forward though to EFI because it gets real old messing with the sticky needle known to Grizzly’s especially if the machine sits for a period of time between uses - granted it is more of the problem being the over priced crummy gas of today versus the needle, but with the quick throttle response of EFI and the possibilites of programming chips, etc……. EFI is the way to go in my opinion.

By the way, my wifes machine has the new ITP 27″ Mud lite XTR tires with the ITP 14″ aluminum rims - awesome tires on the trail and in the mud - they will be my next set of tires without even thinking.

I like the 14″ rims also - less sidewall to deal with and less tire roll when cornering at higher speeds.

    Hello,
A group of us in FL are looking for a place to travel for some unique riding. We like anything wet and just adventures. Any idea? Last year we all went to Telico TN for some rock riding. Amy ideas would be great.
    Thanks,
    Steve

Not sure how far you want to travel, but northern Wisconsin by Hayward, Spooner, Upson, or Clam Lake there are miles and miles of beautiful trails with different levels of challanges from mud, to tricky trails, etc…………..

It sounds like the new Yamaha will be a Grizzly. In talking with Yamaha Reps the new machine is as ground breaking as when ATVs starting coming with electric start. As for a machine being over eight hundrend pounds, Yamaha has a corporate buddie deal with Honda that neither one of the two will build a quad over 650lbs. I cant wait to see the machine and ride it on the 27th.

I heard from my dealer here in VA that the new Grizz will be have the same engine/EFI as the redesigned Rapto whern I bought my ‘06 in March (and a Bruin for my wife and a TT125L for my nephew). I absolutely love the ride, comfort and power of the 660, and will take a ‘wait and see’ approach to possibly upgrading.

There is definitely a lot of interest on this new ATV from Yamaha. I will have a new post on this new ATV which will give you some photos and some first impression notes by first thing Monday morning (as soon as the “no disclose” has been lifted).

Thank you for the report on the 07′ Grizzly. I was truly hoping for something a bit more impressive from Yamaha and when I mean a bit more impressive i mean along the lines of a 750 or 800. I figured they had to add EFI and I was truly hoping they just wouldn’t take the Raptor motor and drop it in. Based on how it was so secretive I figured they were going to release something that would want current Grizzly 660 owners (which I own 2) take a day of vacation, go and trade them off, and pay whatever the dealer wanted to for trade.

But as it turns out, I think I’ll keep my Grizzly’s for now and hope that Yamaha comes out with something more impressive.

Granted I will still test drive one as soon as I can, but my highly anticipated hopes of going to my dealership today and locking one in is not going to happen unless the test drive really blows my socks off, which it doesn’t sound like it will.

I think Yamaha made some real nice improvements, but was hoping for a pure power boost versus taking a baby step in my opinion.

I’M DISSAPPOINTED IN THE NEW GRIZZ ! POWER STEERING?? IT WAS EASY TO BEGIN WITH. THAT IS JUST A GIMMICK THAT WILL GIVE LOTS OF PROBLEMS. WITHIN 2 YEARS THAT WON’T BE SEEN ON ANOTHER GRIZZ! BUT THE BIGGEST BLUNDER IS THE MOTOR. THE RAPTOR 700 IS MARGINALLY FASTER THAN A 660. YOU CAN’T TELL THE POWER DIFFERENCE UNLESS YOU ARE IN A SIDE BY SIDE DRAG RACE. COME ON A 750 SINGLE WOULD HAVE A TON OF TORQUE! OR 800-850 TWIN WOULD BE BETTER. I’M GOING WITH THE CAN-AM 800 !

I have an ‘06 Grizzly and am very happy with it.

I think many of you are missing the point. Most of the talk about a having a 750 or 800 or “gotta have a 1000cc” bike is really just for show. The idea of having the biggest motor isn’t what’s neccessary. Most of you aren’t pulling 1200lbs around every day or racing another bike out of the hole every ride. It’s about the whole package.

If you put an 800cc motor in the same Grizzly, covered up the decals and ran it side by side with a 660 Grizz, many of you wouldn’t see but a marginal difference. If you were to add that power, something else is going to need to be tweeked or more importantly, weight will be added. Thus affecting handeling and then comes complaints about sluggish performace.

I can definately do without he power sterring as that is a “fuu fuu” feature. Somehting else to worry about malfunctioning or breaking (read $$$ here)

Moving the gas tank is cool along with better headlights. The rear swept A-arms in the rear is also interesting.

Don’t know if I “need” to get the new Grizzly . Happy with what I’ve got and I also think the ‘06 look is a little better. I noticed Yamaha now has smaller bikes (450, 350) with IRS and most of the features of the Grizzly. Watch these sales take off like wildfire.

    I have a yamaha rhino.
After I go full throttle it always shuts off.
I have cleaned the air filter, and put in a new oil filter.
Do you know what’s wrong with it?

  • 23. Jason  |  October 19th, 2006 at 10:11 pm

The new grizz is nice but I went with the outlander. I ran against the grizz and i smoked it. THe grizz was stock with stock tires, mine has the bumpers and winch and carlise 26 with rims they are heavy. it was no contest

    I bought a ‘07 grizzly 700. I love it.
i have problems with my right hand, so its impressive to me.

  • 25. wepioq  |  March 2nd, 2007 at 10:34 am

Are they ever goin to make a bigger Rhino?

  • 26. Yamaman  |  March 2nd, 2007 at 10:47 am

Hey Jag you just said it all man. The power steering may be nice but you dont really need it unless you have a 1000cc atv or other offroad thing! But to me i even think that the 660 is to heavy and wastes gas! And im a grown man and the 450 suits me just fine! It holds me just as good as any other atv begger than itself and i am a bigger person. It will go through a whole lot more because of its weight! But the 350 is just a little too small for me.

  • 28. Leah  |  October 7th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

Hi my husband and I have Grizzly 660. We have been having problems with gas getting in through the air filter. It has trouble starting with the air filter on. BUT if you take the air filter off. It starts up on the first try no problem!! Can anyone HELP!?!?! He is too busy with work and I like to ride. BUT it sucks having something that is a pain to get started! Has anyone had this problem? And can you please let me know what to do to fix this problem. Thanks!
