Utah State Record Elk Breakdown

September 8th, 2006 David King - King's Outdoor World

Do you feel it in the air? I feel new state records being taken in 2006! The season is just getting underway here in Utah and things are looking very good for a banner year. I compiled this list of record elk from Utah last year before the 2005 season. I have since updated the list with two new records from the 2005 season. I also left the elk they surpassed as well. Do you think there will be more changes again after the 2006 season? Time will tell.

I get a lot of questions about what the current records are and what the scores are. Here is a breakdown according to rifle, bow and muzzleloader which will cover the records for Boone and Crockett, Pope and Young and Longhunter Society. According to my knowledge, these scores are correct. However, I have been known to be wrong before.

Here is a list along with photos of the current Utah State Record Elk through the 2005 season.

#1 Non-typical

Jeff Didericksen with his 418 3/8 gross, 412 net non-typical B&C elk taken in 2002
This was also the first 400 net scoring elk taken by a hunter

#1 Typical Elk
Lloyd Jacobsen with his 408 4/8 net typical elk

#1 Non-typical Archery Elk

Dan Green with his 410 6/8 gross, 401 1/8 net non-typical P&Y elk taken in 2004

#1 Typical Archery Elk

#1 Non-typical Muzzleloader Elk
Zane Bassett and his 423 7/8 gross muzzleloader elk

#2 Non-typical Muzzleloader Elk

Dave Martin with his 396 3/8 gross, 387 3/8 net non-typical muzzleloader elk taken in 2003

I don’t have information on the #1 typical muzzleloader bull elk. If anyones has any information about what this bull scores, hunter, photos, etc. let me know so I can get it posted and complete the list for Utah’s all-time records for trophy elk.

[…] We’ll see if Greg’s bull can hold on to the record longer than a year. That is how long the previous record held. Zane Bassett’s massive bull from 2005 scored 423 7/8 gross and 392 6/8 net non-typical. […]

  • 12. Can An Elk Last 20 Years &hellip  |  December 9th, 2006 at 12:07 am

[…] Many of us know that finding an elk that has lived in the wild for 12 years is quite unique. I remember back in 2003 when Brian Gilson shot the “then” Utah state record typical, his bull was aged at 12 years old. Some of the big bulls that are being taken down recently are big mature elk over the 10 year mark. But when Wyoming elk hunter Terry Fass shot a cow elk up the West Fork of the Smith’s Fork he had no idea the elk was tagged during a research project 19 years ago. Wyoming Game and Fish Department records indicate the elk was captured April 15, 1987 on the Bald Range and a metal tag placed in her ear. The cow elk was already an adult at that time. […]
