Our new issue of Hunting Illustrated is awesome. What was one of the great bucks taken in 2005? It was Robert Clark’s huge velvet non-typical mule deer nicknamed “The General”. Taken with a bow, this buck scores over 261 gross P&Y and is the largest archery buck taken in the state of Utah. You have not seen this buck or story anywhere else. Hunting Illustrated is the place to get the full story on this incredible buck and the history behind it.

You will also notice that “The General” also graces the cover of HI in a special way. It is a custom re-creation of this buck – the same image that is featured in our new 2007 King’s Bucks & Bulls Calendar and also in our King’s Mule Deer Calendar. Also we have a special feature on the four record non-typical archery velvet bucks taken in 2005:
Richard Burton/Ron Cordes Saskatchewan 271 7/8 net buck
Jed Lowe and his Colorado 260 2/8 net buck
Robert Clark’s Utah 258 2/8 net buck
Randy Ulmer and his Nevada 242 7/8 gross buck

Did you know that all four of these velvet bucks are also featured in our new 2007 King’s Mule Deer Calendar!

There is plenty more in this issue as you get stories on an amazing 411 archery bull taken in Arizona that has a 28-inch sword point! How about we take you along with Paul Roper as he attempts his quest for 20 big game animals with his muzzleloader in 2005. How many did he get? You will find out.

Our cover story is a special gear guide 2006. Get the latest on new products and gear for this year. Like ususal, there is so much more you will find in the pages of Hunting Illustrated. This is what sets HI apart from everyone else – awesome stories on huge bucks and bulls, great editorial content related to mule deer, elk, guns, and predators mixed in with news, illustrations, amazing photography and more.

This issue is available on newsstands nationwide September 14, 2005. Get yours today or call 800-447-6897 and order a subscription today.

Austin & Halleck has been a staple in the muzzleloading community. Unfortunately there is bad news to pass along. We’ve worked a lot with Austin & Halleck over the years and saddened by the news and wish them the best. Here is their statement from their web site:

Records are Being Broken in 2006

27 Sep

The 2006 hunting season is off to a temendous start. A lot of great animals have been going down so I thought I would do a quick rundown on some of the potential record animals so far this season:

Potential Utah state record archery typical elk: A monster bull was taken out in the west desert of Utah. The green score has come in at 405 gross and 388 net typical P&Y. The current state record is 390 4/8 net P&Y. Aparently this bull has a chance as it was scored pretty conservatively. You will see more of this bull after the 60 day drying period.

Potential Utah state record typical elk: There have been two awesome bulls that could challenge the state record typical score of 408 4/8 net B&C. A bull off the Boulder unit has been rough scored at 422 gross. It could challenge the record, but it may depend on how the inside spread is determined on the official score after the 60 day drying period. Another bull has been taken off the Pahvant unit with a green score of 414 gross and 408 net typical B&C. Big bulls are going down in Utah!

New Utah state record Bighorn Sheep: As reported earlier, there was a great ram taken that has been scored at around 192 B&C. This will coast into the record books as the biggest bighorn sheep from Utah.

Possible world record muzzleloader mule deer: A magnificent mule deer has been taken in Nevada with a muzzleloader. As reported earlier, this buck is a 25×27 point toad that has been green scored over 300 inches. Yes, you read correctly. The buck still has most of the velvet still intact and is a cactus buck. Not sure yet just how this will pan out in the record books. Who cares, this buck is huge. Better make sure your Hunting Illustrated Magazine subscription is still current for this buck.

Potential record archery velvet mule deer: There is a photo circulating of a huge velvet non-typical mule deer. The caption reads that it is possibly from Colorado and is 41-inches wide and has 11 points on each side. The buck looks to have a 200 plus typical frame with an easy 50 inches of abnormal points. Last year (2005) was extraordinary with four monster velvet mule deer taken. We will keep a look out for more information on this one.

Top 5 pronghorn antelope: There has recently been a great pronghorn taken in Arizona that has been green scored at over 93 B&C. This will put it in the top 5 in the world.

Potentail New Mexico state record archery typical elk:
Resident archer Bill Clark arrowed a long-tined 6×6 bull elk in central New Mexico with his longbow. The bull has been measured at 411 1/8 SCI and is awaiting the 60 day drying period for the official Pope & Young score.

Biggest 5×5 point elk taken by a hunter: There was a huge five point elk taken this year in Nevada. The elk is a clean 5×5 point and gross scores over 370 B&C.

Stay Tuned…

Big Hoof Buck?

26 Sep

Forget about Bigfoot. We have Bighoof. This is one of the craziest things I have seen in a while. Check out the hooves on this buck. It was hit by a truck in Wisconsin. The DNR said that high protein, specifically corn was the cause of the abnormal feet. Has anyone seen anything like this before?

New World Record Muzzleloader Mule Deer?

26 Sep

Can you believe it? Our very own Hunting Illustrated South of the Border editor just knocked down a monster buck with his muzzleloader. Arnold Sandoval got lucky and drew the mule deer Super Tag for Nevada for 2006. The Super Tag allows him to hunt during all seasons statewide as long as he hunts with the appropriate weapon for that unit and season. He was planning on holding out until late November for the rut to kick in. However, he decided to go out last week with his muzzleloader. He came across a huge buck. It is a 25×27 point, 38-inches wide and green scores 304 gross! This buck still has the velvet intact and is considered a cactus buck. We will have to wait and see how this affects the eligibility for Boone & Crockett. The current world record muzzleloader non-typical mule deer was taken by Lloyd Barton in 1993 in southern Utah and scores 293 6/8 net B&C.

Stay tuned for more….and make sure you are current on your subscription to Hunting Illustrated to see awesome pics and a great story about this buck.

Congratulations Arnold and the guys at Bull Ridge Guide Service.

2006 Elk Hunt Success

25 Sep

We got back from our elk hunt last week and came home with a nice bull, great time with family, and hunted in beautiful country. My brother Rob drew a Book Cliffs elk tag in eastern Utah. We packed in with horses and had the whole mountain to ourselves. What a great time. Here are a few photos from our hunt.

The pack in. The area had been in a huge fire a few years ago. Now there is lush green grass.

Packed in 10 miles and made camp

Opening day we got on a pretty bull that we thought was around the 360 to 370 mark. He was surrounded by cows and satellite bulls so we backed off. Never saw him again. We ended up taking a smaller bull that ended up taking over his herd.

Nothing better than hunting with family. L-R: Alan King, Robert King, Colton King, David King

The pack out…coming home.

Elk Scouting Footage

14 Sep

I am heading out in the morning for an elk hunt. My brother Rob drew a Bookcliffs tag in eastern Utah and I am tagging along. I can’t wait to get out there. We have a storm coming in right now and it is going to drop in temp and really get the bulls going. We are heading in with horses in the roadless area and going in deep. Wish us luck. Here is a little clip from last week from one of Rob’s scouting trips.

160 Farm Elk Escape from Idaho Preserve

14 Sep

This has been a big story. These elk escaped a few weeks ago and are causing havoc for the poeple trying to get the controlled. We have been in contact with the Idaho Governor’s office trying to stay on this. We will continue to follow this story as it unfolds as there could be serious consequences the longer this goes on.

160 Domestic Elk Escape from in Eastern Idaho Game Preserve.

BOISE, ID – Governor Jim Risch signed an emergency Executive Order authorizing the immediate destruction of all domestic elk that recently escaped from an elk farm in Fremont County through a hole in the fence.
“There is a crisis facing our elk herds in eastern Idaho. Because of the escape of domestic elk that was not reported as required by law, we now have these farm-raised elk mingling with our wild elk herds, This emergency action is being taken to protect our wild elk herds in Idaho. There is a serious risk of disease and an altered gene pool from these domestic elk and I am authorizing these activities to begin at the earliest time possible” said Risch.
The Executive Order authorizes the employees of the Fish and Game and the Department of Agriculture to immediately harvest these domestic elk and allows the F&G Commission to authorize licensed hunters and private property owners to harvest these elk without a tag. Attempts to recapture the animals have had only limited success.
Domestic elk are required to have two identifying marks that should be visible up to 150 yards with ear tagging being the most common method. The identification tags from the harvested elk must be reported to the local Fish and Game office.

Karl Malone in Trouble?

13 Sep

There is some interesting news going around about a lawsuit against the former Utah Jazz power foward. Aparently there is a dispute that Karl Malone tried to bribe an Idaho guide about an elk hunt gone wrong. Kind of confusing, but there is a lot of bribery, intimidation and extortion being talked about. Good drama. I won’t pass any judgements until the final verdict is out, but could get interesting. Here is a story on it from SI.com

UPDATE: According to this news update, an Idaho Judge dismisses the claim against Karl Malone.

Six People Injured by Wolf Attack

13 Sep

How would you like to be sitting at the beach watching your kids play in the water when a wolf comes out of the brush and starts going after each of your kids. Helplessly, these kids fought for their lives as a lone wolf caused havoc biting six people on a rampage. This event happened up in Canada just last week. The wolf was later found and killed by wildlife officials.
