Utah State Record Elk Breakdown

Do you feel it in the air? I feel new state records being taken in 2006! The season is just getting underway here in Utah and things are looking very good for a banner year. I compiled this list of record elk from Utah last year before the 2005 season. I have since updated the list with two new records from the 2005 season. I also left the elk they surpassed as well. Do you think there will be more changes again after the 2006 season? Time will tell.

I get a lot of questions about what the current records are and what the scores are. Here is a breakdown according to rifle, bow and muzzleloader which will cover the records for Boone and Crockett, Pope and Young and Longhunter Society. According to my knowledge, these scores are correct. However, I have been known to be wrong before.

Here is a list along with photos of the current Utah State Record Elk through the 2005 season.

#1 Non-typical

Jeff Didericksen with his 418 3/8 gross, 412 net non-typical B&C elk taken in 2002
This was also the first 400 net scoring elk taken by a hunter

#1 Typical Elk
Lloyd Jacobsen with his 408 4/8 net typical elk
Lloyd Jacobsen with the new State Record Typical with a score of 421 6/8 gross and 408 4/8 net B&C taken in 2005

#2 Typical Elk

Brian Gilson with his 414 6/8 gross, 402 4/8 net typical B&C elk taken in 2003

#1 Non-typical Archery Elk

Dan Green with his 410 6/8 gross, 401 1/8 net non-typical P&Y elk taken in 2004

#1 Typical Archery Elk

Kurt Delucero with his 398 6/8 gross, 390 4/8 net typical P&Y elk taken in 2004

#1 Non-typical Muzzleloader Elk
Zane Bassett and his 423 7/8 gross muzzleloader elk
Zane Bassett and his 423 7/8 gross, 392 6/8 net non-typical muzzleloader elk from 2005

#2 Non-typical Muzzleloader Elk

Dave Martin with his 396 3/8 gross, 387 3/8 net non-typical muzzleloader elk taken in 2003

I don’t have information on the #1 typical muzzleloader bull elk. If anyones has any information about what this bull scores, hunter, photos, etc. let me know so I can get it posted and complete the list for Utah’s all-time records for trophy elk.

2007 Honda Foreman with Power Steering!

Honday Fourtrax Foreman 4x4 with Electric Power Steering
I just got big news today from Honda. It looks like they are not going to let Yamaha steal all of the thunder when it comes to industry first innovations for 2007. I reported back on June 25th about Yamaha’s new Grizzly 700 FI with new power steering.

Honda is not too far behind as they are releasing a new Fourtrax Foreman 4×4 ES with a longitudinally mounted 475cc engine, versatile Traxlok 2WD/4WD system and new Electric Power Steering. This system is supposed to provide speed and torque-sensitive steering assistance. Suggested retail price is listed at $7,049.00. I do not have any other photos at this time showing their version of the EPS. There are many comments from my Yamaha Grizzly 700 post regarding the quality and longevity of this new gadget and how it will hold up. I think with both Honda and Yamaha jumping on board the Electric Power Steering, it will quickly become the new feature to have - similar to what EFI (electronic fuel injection) did a couple of years ago.

Here is some information directly from Honda about what they say about their new EPS:

EPS is a unique system consisting of an ECU-programmed electric steering assistance motor and multiple sensors. These sensors measure the handlebar torque applied by the operator as well as the ATV’s speed to determine the correct amount of steering assistance required for all conditions. More assistance is provided in rough terrain and at low speeds to decrease the amount of steering effort required, while less assistance is provided at higher speeds and in smooth terrain. This innovative technology also decreases bumpsteer and kickback through the handlebar in all conditions. The sophisticated Showa system includes separate ECU programming for 2WD and 4WD modes, while spring-loaded steering-motor gears minimize play to increase steering feel and feedback at higher speeds.

I did not get a chance to test ride the new Foreman, but hopefully will be able to get a test unit for a full feature review in a future issue of Hunting Illustrated. However, I was very impressed with Yamaha’s version and if Honda’s is anything similar it should be a great addition. I can only speculate at this time on what this will do performance wise for the Honda. Honestly, I think this could be a real boost for Honda. What I mean by that is, I always felt Honda had too much slip in their front differential four-wheel drive system. I feel the reason for this is Honda is very big on comfort and easy of handling for their customers. This is what makes Honda so great. However, I have never been a big fan of the four-wheel drive system on Honda’s for this very reason - just not tight enough for true digging. I hope with this new EPS system, Honda will get more aggressive on their four-wheel dive system and allow for more aggressive pull from the front wheels and less slip. With the improved rider comfort and handling the EPS will offer while the ATV is engaged in four-wheel drive, hopefully this will come to pass.

New Utah State Record Bighorn Sheep

A tag holder for Bighorn Sheep just knocked down a tremendous ram. It should easily be the new Utah state record with a green score of 196. The current record was taken by Stephen Walker in 1992 and scores 186 3/8 B&C. Up until now there have only been four big horn sheep from Utah that has made the all-time Boone and Crockett record book minimum score of 180.

UPDATE: I originally posted it was the Gov. Tag Holder, but it is not. A special permit on the Ute Indian Reservation.

Utah Sportsman Elk and Mule Deer Tags!

Just got some great news today. Both the Utah Sportsmans Elk and Mule Deer tag holders connected on some great animals this weekend. I am waiting to hear more about the elk, but know it was taken on the Pahvant. The big news is the Sportsmans Mule Deer tag holder just put down an incredible buck in the velvet. It is 38-inches wide and green gross scores 264 B&C. It has a 30-inch main frame with kickers shooting out. What a buck! This was a DIY hunt with family and friends. Can’t get any better than that. I am hoping to go see the buck firsthand tomorrow. I will post more details when I find out more.

More great news…both of these great animals were taken with the hunters wearing King’s Desert Shadow Camouflage. Our 2006 King’s ShadowCamo Photo Contest is going to be a good one this year.

UPDATE: Utah Sportsmans Mule Deer - I had the opporutnity to see this buck firsthand yesterday. I’ll I have to say it wow! What a great buck. The buck has been unofficially green scored at just over 264 gross. I am guessing about 4-5 inches of deductions off the typical frame. Speaking of typical frame, it doesn’t get much better than what this buck has. Sporting a 217 gross typical frame, it has mass, deep forks, huge G-4s and 26 and 27-inch main beams. The outside spread is 37-inches plus. Mark Hogan is the lucky hunter and with the help of his two sons and friends they put together a successful hunt. There is a great story to go along with this hunt.

Utah Sportsmans Elk - This tag was also filled over the weekend and a great bull has been taken. The unique thing about this great bull is once again it was taken self-guided. The bull has an extra long brow tine and early estimates put this bull hitting the 400 gross mark! Congratulations to these hunters.
