The Biggest Elk - 575 Archery Bull? Scoring a Muzzleloader Elk

Most Massive Bull Elk?

October 4th, 2006 David King - King's Outdoor World

Brendan Burns with his Montana Archery Elk
I don’t know about you but I am tired of looking at high fenced bulls. How about a photo of an awesome archery, public land, DIY (do it yourself) bull from Montana taken just a couple of weeks ago. This great bull was taken by Brendan Burns after 14 days of hunting - just another monster bull under his belt. This huge bull could quite possibly be the most massive bull for Pope & Young for a clean 6×6 point typical. The first circumference measurement is 12 6/8-inches. The bull has a total of 70 inches of mass and gross scores 381 P&Y. This bull has short main beams and only a 36-inch inside spread or this thing would have been pushing 400. Enjoy!

A friend of mine works at the boone & crockett headquarters here in missoula, mt. i talked to her about mr.575 last night and she said they researched it on wednesday. all of their research points out that he is a game farm bull from ontario. they have pictures of the bull in velvet.10/05/06

What’s that thing that looks like a grenade launcher in the front of that bow? Just kidding - GREAT BULL and a DIY, PL bull to boot.

What the record books really need is a DIY-PL class to encourage this type of effort. Some of the larger ranches in the west have more elk than Yellowstone and they ‘re tamer too.

DIY on public land is HARD CORP!!!

  • 10. roy  |  October 5th, 2006 at 8:11 pm

Wow that is amazing i would like to have that on hangin on my wall way to go (i hope that bull makes it to the record books)

    Congratulations to Mr. Burns.
Hard work and perseverance do pay off.
    Well done.

  • 15. Jake G  |  October 6th, 2006 at 8:46 pm

About the 575 archery bull . I think its kind of odd that a person would chose to bow hunt in a area that there is no archery season ? If you look in the idaho state regs youll see that the entire elk season is any weapon. so why would you bow hunt in the middle of 1000 + other hunters with rifles in their hands ?

  • 16. Karla  |  October 6th, 2006 at 9:51 pm

    Awesome Bull!!! Congratulations!!!
My Daughter just took her first Deer during our youth hunt (yes it was a free ranging deer) nice 7 point but I try to instil in her and the neighbor kids that ANY deer is a trophy and to be proud of any animal you harvest. Get your kids outdoors and off the couch the pride they feel when they know nature is priceless!

  • 18. jim p  |  October 7th, 2006 at 9:05 am

looks like he shot it straight on, is that a good shot?

  • 19. Brett  |  October 7th, 2006 at 5:19 pm

Brendan, Brett from your hometown, good bull.congrats yet again. you call a bull in to range, you take the shot even if straight on. you gotta want it.

  • 20. Ron Dodson  |  October 8th, 2006 at 12:17 am

I could die a happy man with a bull like that!

  • 21. levi jordt  |  October 8th, 2006 at 12:40 pm

nice bull,i’m with you big difference between fenced and unfenced. fills more like hunting and not so much like just killing

  • 22. Chuck Feney  |  October 8th, 2006 at 2:33 pm

To those who think that’s a frontal shot, that looks like an exit wound from a perfect quartering away shot.

  • 23. Bird Man  |  October 9th, 2006 at 1:57 pm

    Burnsy,
Now that you have you taken out another huge bull for the year. Maybe you can practice some shuffle board so we can hold our own vs. DQ. this year. Great Job! You really put the time in.

  • 24. T Rock  |  October 9th, 2006 at 9:47 pm

    Brendan,
Congrats on a sweet bull! You should be proud of hunting in the great “wild” outdoors and taking this bull. Hard work and dedication pays off- I was lucky enough to take a good 6×6 that goes just over 300 with my bow last month- on public land. Each bull I take with my bow is an experience and memory that I’ll cherish forever. Way to go!

  • 25. MONTANA  |  October 9th, 2006 at 9:55 pm

GREAT PUBLIC LAND BULL. IT SURE IS GREAT TO SEE IT TOOK 14 DAYS TO GET HIM. A LOT OF LEG WORK PAID OFF. GLAD TO SEE IT WAS NOT TAKEN WITH A HIGH DOLLAR OUTFITTER.

  • 26. David  |  October 10th, 2006 at 11:46 am

Nice bull and Congrats my Hoyt Family Brother What Kind OF broadhead did you use ?

  • 27. Blake  |  October 13th, 2006 at 9:41 pm

Nice elk. we have bulls like that in Wyoming, but its been a few years since I’ve received an area 7 tag. anyway congrats brotha.

  • 28. Kasey Martin  |  October 16th, 2006 at 9:42 am

That is a great bull that just goes to show that with hard work and dedacation you don’t need to pay tons of money for a big bull. Great job!!

  • 29. willy  |  October 17th, 2006 at 10:20 am

PL bull my a**. Mr. Burns isn’t the great hunter you all think. He just has the right connections. If he took you to where he shot it, you’d get a monster too. And no I’m not jealous, I have a sweet bull too. Come with me sometime and you’ll see real elk hunting.

  • 30. BILL--- MONTANA  |  October 17th, 2006 at 10:29 am

#29, what do you mean by having the right connections?
is he the only one that has access to this spot thru
    private property? just curious.

  • 31. BILL--- MONTANA  |  October 17th, 2006 at 10:33 am

BY THE WAY MR. BURNS, THAT IS ONE HELL OF A BULL!!!!
MUST HAVE BEEN AWSOME WAITING AND WATCHING HIM
    GET WITHIN RANGE

  • 32. Thomas Stuemky  |  October 17th, 2006 at 7:51 pm

How much did that thing weigh?

  • 33. clifford  |  October 17th, 2006 at 8:26 pm

this is brendans third huge bull in about 5 years and if you ask me it takes more than hard hunting and putting in time to do that.something is a little fishy.

  • 34. bills  |  October 17th, 2006 at 11:21 pm

It sure is disappointing when grown men get jealous over a fellow hunter’s success. Obviously, Brendan consistently kills trophy elk because of his willingness to put in the time and effort to find and track them down–not because of sheer luck, or, as others would like to think, because of shady morals when it comes to hunting. Come on, guys–it’s time to get real and grow up. The only thing “fishy” about Brendan killing big bulls is other hunters trying to discredit his success because of their own inadequacies.

  • 35. clifford  |  October 18th, 2006 at 8:25 pm

hey bill so you are saying that of the other who knows how many thousand hunters none of them are “putting in the time and effort?and that all the rest of us are inadequate.there are lots of guys here in montana and the other states im sure who put in the time and effort and havent got three very large bulls on public land in 4 or 5 years.so maybe you can explain this phenomena.or as far as that goes can you name one person to kill three 370+ bulls in 4 or 5 years on public ground where there is not a limited draw and the tags are over the counter.i read quite a bit of hunting material and have never heard of it.how many have you got or are you inadequate too?it doesnt have anything to do with jealousy,i just think that even when you put in the time and effort getting three bulls of that caliber on unlimited draw over the counter license areas in that amount of time is fishy.

  • 36. willy  |  October 19th, 2006 at 9:23 am

Do the math Bill. How many monsters like that have you ever seen? I’ve covered a hell of alot of country in my life and seen a handful that big. My whole life. Not in 4 or 5 years. I come from a long line of avid elk hunters and have turned down big bulls for good eating elk. So tell me, when is enough enough? That to me is just killing, not the true sport of elk hunting. But hey if I’m wrong then I appologize. But I guess my morales get the best of me sometimes.

  • 37. Mighty Hunter  |  October 19th, 2006 at 3:56 pm

    THAT BULL IS MASSIVE!! NICE!!

  • 38. Ace Ventura  |  October 20th, 2006 at 12:33 pm

Interesting to me how many times I hear this conversation repeated regarding different highly successful hunters. Any time someone posts amazing results, “there has to be something fishy.”

Here’s the bottom line…folks like Brendan Burns, Dan Evans, Randy Ulmer, Chuck Adams, and many more (more than you would think) do a tremendous amount of research to find areas that consistently produce giant bulls (and yes some of these are public land, and some are even on over the counter tags or relatively easy draw odds areas). Then they put a lot of time and effort in and most importantly pass up smaller bulls (that most of us would never consider passing on) to get a giant bull.

As to the merits or demerits of hunting for bulls with huge antlers, this is also another topic of interest to me. Who in the world made it a sin to hold out for a giant rack and who in the world made it OK to look down on someone to kills a “meat” bull for the long winter months? We all hunt for personal reasons. Those reasons vary about as much as you can imagine. Bottom line, if you do it within the prescribed laws AND it fits within your own moral compass and reasons for hunting, then have a great time!

Clifford, for your information, I know several guys that have taken 3+ 370+ bulls on public land in the last 4-5 years in easy draw or unlimited draw areas…do some more research because you can find out who some of these guys are, they just don’t publish their results cause they like a low profile. There are some truly amazing public land hunters out there who hide from the public eye while killing giant bulls year after year.

I too have spent most of my life chasing elk, hunting sheds and scouting and have seen only a handful of these giants too. BUT! Admittedly, I have not spent most of my time in the best areas that the west has to offer for giant bulls and you can’t see them where they are not living!

This year in the Missouri Breaks I spent two weeks, looked at over 200 different bulls and saw three that would gross between 340-350…none bigger! YET! I have a good friend who hunted the SAME unit and killed his second consecutive 365+ gross P&Y bull in the SAME unit and saw two others as big or bigger. Do I call him a liar and claim he hunted another unit or do I take my lumps and plan on spending my time in a different area next year?

Give Brendan some credit, he is a tremendously hard hunter dedicated to hunting giant bulls. Great bull Brendan!

  • 39. Young Hunter  |  October 21st, 2006 at 11:12 am

Nice Bull! Where did u get him at? I hunt in Montana so I have been to the Missouri breaks, but I didn’t see any as big as that1! I hope 2 get a bull someday!

  • 40. Bird Man  |  October 23rd, 2006 at 12:12 pm

    Ace Ventura,
Very well put and very well worded. I could not have writen it better….. I find it ironic that people search out sites like King’s outdoorworld that hightlight the biggest and the best of the best, and then comment that someone breaking away from average is doing something fishy.

  • 41. Dan Gus  |  October 26th, 2006 at 11:41 am

Congradulations, next time you make it into butte you’ll get some cocktails sent your way.

  • 42. Mike  |  October 26th, 2006 at 3:09 pm

Another monster for Burns. Public Land…Yes it was I know for a fact. Special Draw…Yes Easy to draw….Not any more. Brendan kills alot of trophy animals, all of which you can see on the Hoyt prostaff pics. Is he an amazing hunter? yes he is, but I truly feel that any of us can achieve this same kind of status if we put in the time that he does. No high fences up there…Just the same old sand that every missouri river breaks hunter sees!!! ;)

  • 43. GameGetter  |  October 30th, 2006 at 12:20 pm

    Three things about this THREAD!
    History on ME.

I live and hunt (deer), help with elk in the area that Brendan has killed the three bulls in. Ive Lived here forever great country.

    Overview of area.

Primarily private land with some state sections scatter but few. One large section of state land which is land locked almost unless you like walking and packing 4 miles + (IX).

Hunter Access : LIMITED unless you know someone.

Brendan has drawn a permit 3 out of 5 times in this area. He has shot 3 giant bulls in this area.

I have hunted with bowhunters in this area and it is hard to get a monster bull regardless if it is private land or public in this area. I have helped people take big bulls in riffle season and it is even harder. The big bulls just dissappear at that time of the year.

My Opinion of Brendan Burns :
    1. He hunts harder than 99% of the hunters out there.
    2. He is one hell of a shot.
    3. HE KNOWS MONSTER BULLS.

    CONGRATS!!!!!!!!
Im calling him when I draw a permit.

  • 46. Vectrix07  |  May 3rd, 2007 at 5:20 pm

Burns success has nothing to do with him. It is all in the equipment. Hoyt Bow with Fuse accessories.

    Great bull. Congrats.

  • 47. Travis Walker  |  May 20th, 2007 at 10:30 am

Guys this kid knows what he is doing. I live in Montana and know thes areas. He is heck of a hunter and deserves every thing he shoots. Dan Evans kills 2-3 370+ bulls a year. Good Job Burns and hope to see You in the field some time.

  • 48. bub  |  November 2nd, 2007 at 12:59 pm

wow!!! i live in montana and have never seen a bull killed that big on public ground and DIY that is awsome. nice bull!!!

  • 49. Kylen  |  November 8th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

    Thats one huge bull bud!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 50. Dave  |  November 30th, 2007 at 12:14 am

    Ace Ventura:

The guys you mention above and compare Burns to I think are in a whole different category. I might be wrong but I heard Chuck Adams paid big $$ to gain access where he killed one of his 400+ bulls and Dan Evans buys up the land owner tags in NM and Nevada which amount to thousands of dollars. Some public land can come at a very high priced consequence to hunt.

I don’t know anything about Brendan but what I have read is he hunted public ground DIY. I read his story in Eastman’s and it was good. Best part was about “loose lips sink ships”. I can relate as I have lost a best friend of 25 years over this type of scenario.

If Brendan had to pay a fee to trespass or was the only one who was awarded access through private to reach public then I can see a little catch.

Was this bull killed in Hill County as well then?

It is a great bull nonetheless. Anybody who kills a bull like that legally and ethically deserves a congrat’s.

Brendan, good job man, thanks again for the bow you picked out years ago in Havre, it has done well for me, I myself took a bull this year with that very bow but not big at all, but he eats well. email me with any new pics and I’ll do the same.
