Potential State Record Muzzleloader Bull Elk

October 13th, 2006 David King - King's Outdoor World

Greg Holman with his potential state record muzzleloader non-typical elk
UPDATE: Here is Greg with his potential Utah state record muzzleloader non-typical elk

As reported by John C on his comment on the post New World Record Muzzleloader Typical Elk, there is a potential Utah state record non-typical muzzleloader elk taken that looks like will take over the top spot. The current record is a bull taken from 2005 by Zane Bassett and scores 423 7/8 gross, 392 6/8 net B&C.

Here is what has been said about the new bull that Greg Holman recently took in 2006:

The bull is a 9×8 and I gross unoffically scored him at 414 2/8 and 396 6/8 net but i didn’t give him the proper measurement for his inside spread so I had to add an extra 9 inches so he should score around 423-430 gross and should net around 405. He also has 15 inches of broken tine!!! if intact this bull could be a 440 bull!

It looks like this should not have a problem with this bull becoming the new state record. Hopefully the inside spread will hold true and he can net score over the 400 mark. The #3 non-typical muzzleloader bull in the world scores 406 4/8 net, so Greg’s bull could also be the new #3 or #4 in the world. If this bull hadn’t of broken his left G3 point he would be sailing to a possible overall state record as well.

It looks like Utah is going to get new muzzle loader state records for both typical and non-typical.

UPDATE: This bull has been officially scored and is the new Utah state record non-typical muzzleloader bull elk. He scored in at 422 4/8 gross and 403 2/8 net B&C.

Its amazing the bulls this state is producing. The shocking thing about Gregs bull is that we dont think he is over 7 years old!! His teeth were hardly even worn.

This is an amazing bull elk.

I think John is correct. Even if the scores hold up and he becomes a record, I won’t be surprised if it only lasts a year, I’m hearing of some monsters still out there roam’n the hills.

John, I called on the teeth, I’ll probably find out the age next September……?????

Bryon, definately the biggest I’ve seen.

Rich, he came from a limited entry unit in Utah. You have a lot of years ahead of you so don’t get discouraged!!! Hunt hard and scout if you can, good luck!

John, I hear ya about the once in a lifetime hunt. That’s exactly how I approached this year, new gun/gear (camo, only the best!) etc. I’m surprised you didn’t draw with max points, next year for sure! I’d rather not say here where but he’ll be hanging at the Expo in Jan. and I’ll bet it’ll be listed there. Thanks guys! I can’t wait to see him on the wall!!!

    Greg
I fully understand “WHY” you rather not (I do know where) say where!!! Yes …..you approached your hunt exactly how you needed to!!! GOOD FOR YOU!!!! We have some good bulls in the state, but getting the tag is a story in it’s self. I have spent MANY days with my sons on our horses looking at good bulls through out the state and I too are keeping quite on this!! I hope you do not take offence to this, but we have our “famous outfitter” and his clients out there buying up the conservation permits………paying young men (they are selling their souls) thru out the state $500 to $5000 to just take a look at a good bull……….well I am sure you know the rest of the story and that’s one more reason to keep quite!! I look forward to seeing your bull at the Exp in Jan. And again good bull and GOOD FOR YOU!!!

  • 11. Greg  |  October 27th, 2006 at 4:29 pm

John, I think you may misunderstand my “why”. It doesn’t have anything to do with the guide industry, simply a matter of not wanting to publicize any certain area so of course no offense taken. This was definately a DIY hunt, with the help of great friends and family. Like yourself, I spent alot of time scouting this year, starting back in Feb. I am envious of you though……. you have horses! :)

  • 12. John  |  October 27th, 2006 at 5:12 pm

    Greg
PLEASE… I did not mean it any way that it had anyting to do with the guide industry as the reason “WHY”. Please do not give that another thought. I apologize for how I worded it. Your reasons “WHY” are the same as my reasons “WHY”. I know it was a DIY hunt…..which makes your bull that much sweeter!!!
About the four horse…. you can have them from Nov. thru March O;-). I am a hardcore rider and still continue to look things over in the winter time, if the snow is not to deep.

    Have a good weekend

Any other year I’d take you up on that horse offer, the Nov. muzzy elk hunt is my favorite! Have a good weekend yourself!

I am trying to book an elk hunt I would like to know what the views are about the best state for bagging an elk? any help would be great

  • 17. FarmBoy  |  November 3rd, 2006 at 1:08 am

i would try down in utah and that area

  • 18. Dan  |  November 3rd, 2006 at 8:55 am

If you check the B&C, Arizona produces the largest elk. However, getting a tag in AZ is also the hardest to get of all the western states. You could book a hunt at Rulon Jones’ ranch in northern Utah for an elk hunt. His ranch is 5000 acres for managed elk, he also has free roaming elk as well on the other 15,000 acres. Heard great things about the hunt and ranch.

thank you for the help. I will be going with two brothers and my dad. we really want to make sure we get 4 elk. So I know there can’t be a place that guarantees an elk but just want to find the place that will produce the best odds.
