As the storm clouds settle in Jon Limpert, Todd Munford and James Limpert pose next to James’ great Utah buck
Here is a post from our very own Todd Munford, factory rep here at King’s Outdoor World. Todd has been busy selling camo and also doing a little guiding on the side. Here is a quick blub from Todd on how his fall hunts have been going so far:
In the fall I am fortunate enough to take a small break from the camo sales and actually hit the woods to test our great camoflauge. James and Jon Limpert, Chris Clemm and myself headed out to Northern Utah for the opener of the 2006 General Season Elk hunt. We guide for Jed and Jen Wayment who own and operate J & J Outfitters out of Henefer, Utah. We had four great hunters with us for the opening day. Larry, Layne, Bill and Phil who all had great enthusiasm and expectations to harvest some nice bullies.
The hunt was awesome. We saw alot of game and filled all four of our tags by Monday afternnoon. Bill and Phil both shot respectable 6 points. Lane shot his first bull elk ever (5 X5) and his father Larry (72 years old) shot a beautiful 52 1/2″ wide 5 X 5. Once all of our hunters headed home James & Jon Limpert and myself started to concentrate on mule deer. James (J Range) had a CWMU deer tag . On a snowy, cloudy morning James made a nice shot on this beautiful 170+ muley.
All of us were wearing Desert Shadow camo. It passed all tests and I can’t wait to get out in the field again. I am the Sales Director for King’s Outdoor World and was so impressed at the functionality and effectiveness of our camo. We love to hunt!
If you’re interested in a 2007 big game hunt, please contact Jed or Jen Wayment with J & J Outfitters (1-435-336-4146).
Have a wonderful hunting season!

Another black bear encounter is in the news from Idaho. Apparently a black bear charged out of the brush into a backyard where kids were playing. The babysitter heard one of the kids yell, “Bear! Bear!”. She immediately grabbed the kids and fled inside and closed the sliding glass door with the bear at their heals. The bear started banging on the door. The babysitter grabbed a 7mm rifle (who is a licensed bear hunter), opened the sliding door and shot the bear at point blank range. I think a little extra tip is in store for this girl. Here is the full story:

UPDATE: Here is Greg with his potential Utah state record muzzleloader non-typical elk
As reported by John C on his comment on the post New World Record Muzzleloader Typical Elk, there is a potential Utah state record non-typical muzzleloader elk taken that looks like will take over the top spot. The current record is a bull taken from 2005 by Zane Bassett and scores 423 7/8 gross, 392 6/8 net B&C.
Here is what has been said about the new bull that Greg Holman recently took in 2006:
The bull is a 9×8 and I gross unoffically scored him at 414 2/8 and 396 6/8 net but i didn’t give him the proper measurement for his inside spread so I had to add an extra 9 inches so he should score around 423-430 gross and should net around 405. He also has 15 inches of broken tine!!! if intact this bull could be a 440 bull!
It looks like this should not have a problem with this bull becoming the new state record. Hopefully the inside spread will hold true and he can net score over the 400 mark. The #3 non-typical muzzleloader bull in the world scores 406 4/8 net, so Greg’s bull could also be the new #3 or #4 in the world. If this bull hadn’t of broken his left G3 point he would be sailing to a possible overall state record as well.
It looks like Utah is going to get new muzzle loader state records for both typical and non-typical.
UPDATE: This bull has been officially scored and is the new Utah state record non-typical muzzleloader bull elk. He scored in at 422 4/8 gross and 403 2/8 net B&C.

There is no question one of the hottest topics going right now is the confusion of elk preserves and high fenced hunting. Over the last two years nothing can equal the interest that this has caused as the most popular posts made on the King’s Outdoor World Blog have been our posts about elk taken in high fence hunting preserves and the confusion they are causing the misinformed public. Honestly, I would rather post about something else, but we do it to help provide some answers and I don’t think you are going to find another place on the web that has more active discussion about this topic than here due to everyone’s comments.
Idaho has defintely been the center of much of this attention. Last year in 2005, a huge 502 SCI bull was doing the rounds on the Internet and email that we posted here to help clear up the confusion. It was a bull taken on an Idaho high fence hunting preserve. Then in 2006 things took a bad turn as we reported that 160 domesticated elk escaped into the wild from an Idaho game farm. This is a very heated topic and pretty bad situation that the the land owners, Fish and Game, local sportsmen and the Governor’s office are all involved in. Of course we can’t forget our recent stint of confusion as the “claimed” Selway-Bitteroot 575 Idaho elk turned out to be a high fence elk from Quebec.
So Idaho needs a little PR. Recently there has been a new web site created by the Idaho Elk Breeders Association to help educate and inform the public about the high fence elk operations in Idaho. There are 78 domesticated elk ranches located all throughout Idaho. This web site is a way for the Idaho Elk Breeders Association to provide information to the public about what really goes on behind the fence. Take a look at their web site :

Is this one of the most incredible things you have ever seen. Don’t have much information to include on this just yet, but apparently these guys were Salmon fishing and hooked this trophy bull in the water. Not sure of the location.

How many 400 class bull elk from Utah in 2006?….12, 13, 14, 15?
Well, how about we add to the mix a potential record muzzleloader bull. How big is this bull? It could be the new muzzleloader world record typical. It could be the muzzleloader state record typical. It could even be the overall Utah state record typical elk. This beautiful, clean 6×6 point bull has no major broken points and is very symmetrical. It has been green scored at 416 2/8 gross and 412 1/8 net typical B&C. This will shatter the current world record ( a New Mexico bull taken in 1998 and scores 397 5/8 net), cremate the muzzleloader state record (I think net scores in the 380s) and quite possibly could challenge the awesome bull Lloyd Jacobson took last year which scores 408 4/8 net typical.
Of course this is just an unofficial green score, but looks to be the top bull to come out of Utah in 2006 so far. Look for more on this bull in the coming weeks as I will be checking this great bull out in person shortly. And yes, you will be able to see all the great pics and full story in a future issue of Hunting Illustrated.

In my post about “The Biggest Elk - 575 Archery Bull” I asked our fellow blog readers to help me out on tracking down more information to this bull. Since I am still getting emails about this bull, even from people who are on the Blog, it is clear not everyone is reading the whole post. I guess many readers are not making it all the way to the bottom and reading my conclusion. For those of you who didn’t, yes the bull is from a high fenced game ranch in Quebec and not from Idaho or Montana.
However, back to my point. Due to your help we were able to track down what we needed to about this email fiasco. The first person who sent me pertinent information about this elk would get a nice ShadowCamo fleece jacket and hat. I received a lot of great emails, faxes, phone calls and leads. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately I can’t give jackets to the thousands who flocked to the blog post, but I will give out the prize to the person who first gave me the crucial lead I needed.
Shaun and “Desert Sheep” actually emailed me the velvet pics and skull pics at the same time verifying it was indeed a high fence bull. I am going to send both a hat. However, Desert Sheep actually followed it up with a link to the actual ranch in Quebec that gave me the lead I needed to make contact with them and get the information I needed. It took me a while to do this, and in the meantime received a lot of information from other blog readers. However, the initial lead that Desert Sheep sent me turned out good. Therefore, Desert Sheep will also get the nice ShadowCamo fleece jacket to go with his hat and will let him decide on what pattern he would like - Desert Shadow, Mountain Shadow, or Snow Shadow.
Thanks everyone.

Like usual I was pretty busy today still trying to get caught up from the past two weeks. However, when someone calls asking if they can bring up the elk they just took and see if I could score it up for them….there is always time for that.
Jake Smith from Utah just put down this very fine 6×6 point elk with his muzzleloader. He brought his elk to the office today and I was able to put a tape to it. The bull has great fronts with the left G2 measuring over 20-inches and an impressive 48 5/8-inch inside spread. The weak backs and short beams kept him from going over the 350 mark. The right G4 was broken or he would have been pushing the 340 mark. I scored him out at 334 4/8 gross B&C. Jake smoked him in the rain with his muzzleloader and has a great trophy on his hands. The bull will easily make it into the Longhunter record book. Nice job Jake.

The bull had good mass all the way to the end

Here is a nice shot showing the great tine length on the G2 point

I don’t know about you but I am tired of looking at high fenced bulls. How about a photo of an awesome archery, public land, DIY (do it yourself) bull from Montana taken just a couple of weeks ago. This great bull was taken by Brendan Burns after 14 days of hunting - just another monster bull under his belt. This huge bull could quite possibly be the most massive bull for Pope & Young for a clean 6×6 point typical. The first circumference measurement is 12 6/8-inches. The bull has a total of 70 inches of mass and gross scores 381 P&Y. This bull has short main beams and only a 36-inch inside spread or this thing would have been pushing 400. Enjoy!
