When Eagles Attack

Back in August I did a post about Eagles. This post was a follow up to an article in our Hunting Illustrated Magazine by Michael Burrell talking about the potential for Eagles to be predators to the vulnerable deer. I recommend you check it out and read the comments of some great first-hand experiences about how powerful these Eagles really are.

On the Salmon and Snake rivers in central Idaho we have been watching Golden eagles kill Mule deer and Bighorn sheep for years. They will actually grab a fawn or a lamb and fly a few feet with it and drop it. The country is steep and the fall starts it rolling down the mountain and injures it so the eagle has easy pickings.
We’ve also seen the eagles catch mule deer on the rock ledges and worry them to the point that they lose balance and roll off the mountain - again, easy pickings.
These are the reasons that Golden eagles were shot on site until about the 1960’s. We still think that there are too many eagles in this country.

Rick, what exactly are you implying in your closing statement? Too many eagles? I suppose you are entitled to your self-educated opinion, but I certainly hope you do NOT practice as you suggest. Eagles are NEVER to be shot… anytime, anyplace. I’m not accusing you of such didainful behavior, however, please consider how your post could be interpreted. Thank you and good day sir.

the balance of nature is almighty……the eagles with the splendor and their strengh show the power that the one above has bestow unto them……the deer while fragile and beautiful is being hunted by so many including us…..yet those who manage to survive are gifted with knowledge and survival to become as the eagle a great creation….keep the good work we are all conected in the balance of nature. thank you for a great travel to this balance

Watch what you’re saying salmonriverrick!! you dont know how important the eagles are to the Native Americans!! It’s like you’re saying to get rid of the eagles!!

Geez! EZ guys. Getting rid of something that has not lost its chance in this world is wrong. Not like wolves these days. But maybe Rick was giving an example of MANAGEMENT! Big word I know but killing is involved in MANAGEMENT.

darren the wolves did not lose their chance it was ripped away by people praticing over managment. Knowing the whole story is crittiial to any managment program and all we have here inculding mine is opinions

I agree that the eagles should not be shot, but I don’t think that is what Rick is saying. I too think there are too many birds of prey, not just the eagles. Predation in my part of the country is very high due to the hawks and eagles. We drive a 15 mile loop once or twice a week in the winter to watch the elk as they move into lower country after the pressure is gone from the hunters. On any given day, you can count 20 or 30, maybe more, hawks and eagles perched on fenceposts, or power poles. Not so long ago, you could take the same drive and see ruffed grouse, blue grouse, and occasionally a pheasant or two. I have not seen an upland game bird, not one in this loop in at least 5 or 6 years. When we used to pick up shed antlers in the spring, we would find piles of feathers from an upland bird and wonder what killed them. No need to wonder any more. The uplands are gone and the prey birds get to be more and more all the time.
