Fastest Bows for 2007
July 27th, 2007 David King - King's Outdoor World
What is the fastest bow? In our latest issue of Hunting Illustrated (Aug/Sept 2007) I put together a Top Ten list of the fastest bows for 2007. I don’t consider this 100% complete or accurate, but this is what I dug up after a little research. I am sure I missed some, so if you know of a bow that is shooting over 312 fps (IBO) and it is not listed post a comment and let me know.
Below I have posted an extended list showcasing the fastest bows. I made the cutoff at 312 fps (there’s quite a few at the 310 mark). Just an FYI, the “Speed 2″ column is used on some bows and this is where the actual posted speed was a range of like 342-348, not a single number (so make your own conclusion).
One of our factory reps (Blake Stoker) just bought the X Force bow from PSE, which is currently the fastest bow on the market right now (update: Nope, the APA Black Mamba X1 is at 353 pfs…see comment below). I went out a couple of weeks ago and flung a few arrows. That bow smokes!
UPDATE (8/9/2007): Thanks to your comments, I have updated the list which now includes APA, Elite Archery and Ross Archery. The PSE has now been knocked down to third. The list is getting better.

Wow that’s an impressive list. It’s amazing how far bow technology has come. I just wanted to add a friendly reminder to new bowhunters: Don’t get caught up with the ft. per second competition with your fellow hunters. If you can’t hold your bow back for more than 60 seconds the speed is not worth it. I made this mistake when I started some 14 years ago. I missed many opportunities at good bulls because I just couldn’t hold the bow back long enough. I had my poundage cranked up way too high just to try to keep up with my buddies. Big mistake! I now only shoot 270 fps. But I can hold that baby back and steady for a long long time. Since then I have filled tags every year. That’s all I wanted to say. Good luck all!
Thanks for your effort compiling this list. It will prove helpful.

I do believe APA bows, specifically the black mamba would top that list by quite a bit

John,
Thanks for the heads up on the APA Innovations Inc. bows. You are correct on the Black Mamba in addition to a few of their other bows that are true smokers. This is what they have that will make the list…not to mentioned be crowned the fasted bow overtaking the PSE.
Black Mamba X1- 353 FSP (IBO)
Black Mamba XX2 - 340
Anaconda VT - 330
Suphan XP - 322
Python XP - 315
I will update the list when I get a chance…Thanks.

I was at Tabes Shawnee OK today sighting in my bow (highcountry max force). I tried one of his new bows (highcountry stilletto 380). Now my draw length is only 26″, he setup a bow for my draw length and the poundage was at 65 pounds. It shot speeds at 365 FPS. I shot this bow and it had no recoil/vibration at all. I was very impressed with the bow. I’m thinking I need one.
8. Matt | August 29th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
I have an Iron Mace High Country. That bow can reach speeds they say up to 400 fps. I can get mine to about 360 fps for the way I want it set up. The bow is so consistent shot for shot I think it should be on the top bows ever made.
9. Matt | August 29th, 2007 at 10:51 pm
Also ill bet you anything if you shoot the pro series high country arrows all the bows would increase fps.(5.5 grains)
10. Scott | September 3rd, 2007 at 12:00 pm
Just want to know how smooth these bows are and which ones are not only fast but quiet as well. I love speed and I like to pull 75# back but I want it smooth and quiet too. Any help on this?
11. keith | October 8th, 2007 at 4:14 am
Everyone is braging about this HIGH COUNTRY at this speed but they dont relize that they are shooting such a lite arrow that they are more the less dry fireing the bow see how long it last at this speed the PSE X-FORCE is a true accurate and very safe shooter at 348 -350 fps with a 350 grain arrow so if you think your bow is fast shoot the same grain arrow through it and compare
12. keith | October 8th, 2007 at 4:58 am
Oh and smooth and allllot quiter than the high countrys line of bows say what you will PSE out shoots out performes and yes you stil get speed accurate quite and all the nock down power needed at 93 foot pounds of kinetic energy . Try to get a consistant 3 to 4 inch pattern at a 100 yards out of any other hunting bow out there today i challeng ya the best of all time world champ archer in the !!world!! says PSE X-FORCE is the best he’s ever shot
!! NOW THAT SAYS SOMETHING !! Any one can talk chit but when the best speak people listen .This is like asking Dale Ernhart what is the best tire on the market for the big ovel track lol (END OF STOREY)
13. gary | November 4th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
chronograph a bow before you buy it.never believe a manufacturer i havent saw an honest speed yet from a manufacturer.some as many as 30 fps wrong.
14. phil | November 17th, 2007 at 8:41 pm
I would say all of these bows are fantastic. The HCA’s are warrantied down to 3 Grains per pound for life, so that kind of negates the dry firing issue. As for the PSE, great bow, I shot one the other day. Not friendly but very nice non the less. The APA’s are amazing. But I have to say that HCA gets the prize for me. well over 7 inches of brace hight, over 2″ more brace than the pse and still at around 342 with my Maxima 250’s. you can bet if they went down to 5.5″ brace that they would be well over the 350 fps, but apparently they want to keep their bows friendly enough for everyone. No valley on any of these. very hard draw stops, which for all you new guys out there, after you get used to it, it will improve your accuracy A LOT.
But as far as best bow for the buck, i will know after this week when I shoot the HCA stiletto and the new bowtech guardian. that is of course not including any custom bows. And as far as a 100 yard group? almost any bow on that list will shoot that kind of group with the right setup, tune and most importantly, the archer. Put a world champion behind any bow, and the results will be pretty spectacular. Just look what was done with the liberty one at the vegas nationals!!
Happy hunting and shooting
Phil

This was in my opinion a very accurate list but i saw one that is missing call the Pse X-force that is expose to be 350 plus fps
16. Jason king | December 5th, 2007 at 8:24 am
What about the High Country claims to 390 FPS with their Speed max pro carbon arrows?
17. PlayDaddy | December 13th, 2007 at 5:18 pm
I bought a High Country Iron Mace direct from High Country Archery about 3 weeks ago. I should’ve known from the start. They said it would be a week or so before the would have any lefties. I asked,”do you not make these?” She assured me they made them, they were only behind on production. After the bow finally came in, it had the wrong draw length module installed. I had to call multiple times about this before anyone would call me back. The person that did return my call assuered me that my correct modules would go out the following day, and only take one day to ship. On my next off day, 4 days later, I went to the archery shop. No Modules. I called the shoop 3 days later, no mods. I called High Country and there was no record of any mods being shipped for me. After all this , they wouldnt send the mods at no charge, I had to pay for them until they recieved the old mods in return. I shot the bow around 60 shots. The speed was up there, not as good as they claimed, but fast. I was shooting a 27″ 5.5 grain Carbon Rev w/100 gr tips and blazers. a 310 gr arrow chronoing 319-320fps. After about 45 shots, the draw length seemed to lengthen a little. I had to change my form to see through the peep.I examined the cams. They were fine. I shot a few more times but it just didnt feel right anymore. I went inside and my string, right where the serving stops, was unwinding and freying. I sent High Country this pic in an email that I know is monitored. I called and left messages with humans that assuered me the message would be given. I had to order my own string today from the local pro shop. You would think, a company trying to make a come back, in such a competative market, would take a little better care of there customers

im shooting my xforce at 28″ 58# and im getting 330 through the crono 58LBS!!!!! i shot a 300 score with it and had 56 x’s if your hunting bow needs to be more accurate
22. keith | May 9th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
i was shooting a Mathews Black Max aT 318 FPS (29 ” DRAW). It’s a sweet rig. I now also have a APA Black Mamba Extreme 2. It shoots in the high 330’s but the major difference is the smooth release and the low recoil . The technology by APA is amazing! If you can test drive one of these, and compare to any other bow made, do so and see where it stands. I thought I was a Mathews man forever, but I added the APA bow to my arsenal and prefer it.
23. Hightekcowboy | May 20th, 2008 at 4:13 pm
You do not have the original Black Mamba Extreme in your list. It shoots at 345 fps IBO. It should be 4th in your list.
24. Hightekcowboy | May 20th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Gary,
You obviously do not understand what IBO speed entails. You should look it up.

27. Randy | May 6th, 2009 at 6:16 am
While working the overnight shift, I have found this list and comments to be incredibly interesting. I have shot a Mathews for the past ten years or so, but am thinking that it is time to retire her and get a new rig. If anyone in San Diego California knows of a good place to shoot/a good practice location, please feel free to post, I will check back regularly. To the gentleman getting 360 out of your bow with a 28? and 58#, that is amazing–great job!
28. gavin jeter | August 10th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Im shooting the bowtech 82nd airborne and the ibo is 350 but im shooting 388 at 70 pounds 29 inch draw with a 5.5 gpi arrow but the bow couldent handle it so im shooting a heavy arrow and im shooting 365 now
29. Mike | September 23rd, 2009 at 9:37 am
All this speed is great and 100yrd shots yeah thats cool but lets look deeper. If your huting and you practice and would try a 100yd shot your dumb and a very poor sportsman. Secondly all this speed andsuper light arrows is great but the speed, kinetic energy and the ability to cosistently shoot your bow over and over again is what it boils down to. I got a Liberty bow set at 61# with a 30″ draw shooting Beman ICS Hunter 400 spine 8.4gpi. Im getting speeds with complete hunting set up peep sight, nock loop the hush kit by diamond on the bow and I’m shooting 278-282. I’m no robin hood but i can shoot on anygiven day 200+ arrows ad my groups at 20yds aresub 2″ 30 yds 4″ 50 yds 8″ amd my longest shots just playin were about 85 yds and the group was 18″ these are 10 arrow shot groups mind you and the group is all 10 arrows sure the only factor that changes the grouping is me. Cause out of every shot group there are 5 or more shafts within 2″ even at 85 yds. So here is my info for whoever it helps dont go for just speed if you cannot dot “i’s” or cross “t’s” then guess what the fastest bow means nothing research the factors brace height axle to axle length cam design vibration let off everything about the bow and fall in love when you shoot it dontshoot your friends or anyone elses go to the archery shops and shoot a brand new bow thats not setup. If a true archer owns it then gess wat its tweaked and tuned and everything on it is either perfect or so close its an obcession. And for fun. When I was 15 I had a $55 york bow fro walmart that shot at 55# aluminum easton shafts i shot arrow on arrow groups at 20 yds and 1″ groups at 40 yds and we shot 60 cause the rest got boring and we shot 4″ groups at 60 and lord knows me and that bow with muzzys killed every deer we shot at!!! So dont get to involved with gotta be new, gotta be fast, gotta be most expensive. Find a bow and fall in love!!!!!!!
