It's true you don't want to get between a sow and her cubs, but the real issue is merely getting close enough to encroach on the sow's "personal space," which forces her to fight or flee. You don't have to get between a sow and her cubs to trigger a charge, you just have to get close enough. With hunters and hikers, it's most common to accidentally startle a nearby bear and get charged. Photographers who approach bears are playing Russian roulette. They don't know if they'll cross the invisible line marking the boundary of the bear's personal space at a distance of 73 yards, or 29 feet. Once they've encroached on the bear's personal space, they don't know if the bruin will fight or flee. If the bear charges, they don't know if it will stop short of making contact, or put them in a hospital. Approaching an unfamiliar bear is suicidal.

This is true and it happend in Grande Prairie, Alberta the man was from a small town just south of Grande Prairie called Grovdale. The fellow was out setting up for bow hunting season and did get between the sow and cubs. After the attack wednesday eavining the man walked almost 2 kms before reaching his vehicle, the sow was stabbed 3 times and was found 30 yards from where he was attacked, the cubs are still unacounted for. He is still in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
