Possible State Record Archery Buck from Utah
August 23rd, 2007 David King - King's Outdoor World
The season is underway. So how are things panning out in 2007? So far there have been a few really nice velvet archery bucks taken in Utah from the opening weekend. I have been fortunate to talk with people and seen a couple of photos of a possible Utah state record archery typical mule deer. This buck is deceiving from its pictures, which don’t do it justice. However, the buck is 30-inches wide and “rough” green scores about 210 gross and 204 net typical. It was taken on public land, general season tag. Of course it is still early on this score. It does have a 3-inch kicker on one side and some junk around the eyeguards that could go either way.
UPDATE: I had the chance to talk with the hunter, Brady Larsen, about his great Utah archery buck. Here is the latest rundown on this velvet muley. He took it to a taxidermist and had it scored again. He still is waiting the 60 day period before anything is official, however, this gets us a little closer as to what this would probably score and how it stacks up to a possible state record archery typical buck. The abnormal points are what is going to hurt this buck, which is unfortunate. But a monster nonetheless. This buck has a gross non-typical score of 219. The typical frame is an awesome 212. It has about an 3 6/8-inch kicker on the left side along with about three inches of other abnormal points around the eyeguard that is going to cause extra deductions from the net typical score. After all deductions it is coming in around 212 gross and 198 6/8 net typical P&Y. However, this is not all….The most impressive feature on this buck is the mass. Early projections show that this buck has 54-inches of mass! That’s right, over 50-inches of mass. That is incredible. I would like to know what the most massive typical mule deer is in Pope & Young.
The good news is you will be seeing this buck featured in an upcoming issue of Hunting Illustrated. So is this buck going to be the next state record? Right now the green score puts him very close. However, there is another buck taken by Brad Roberts that could possible inch past as a potential state record as well. Brad’s buck is reported as being green scored at 213 gross and 201 + net typical P&Y. And that is without any eyeguards. Very pretty buck as well.
Stay tuned…

How goes it,
This buck was taken opening wekend by a friend of mine who I grew up and went to school with. I spoke with him shortly after he arrowed this truly beautiful deer…and I can promise you that he is absolultey ecstatic, I am as well. David is 100% right…photos of this animal do it no justice. The mass all the way through is what impressed me the most, he can’t get his hands around the bases if that says anything for it. Once the photos of this buck go public…you’ll see what I’m talking about and just what all the hype surrounding this deer is really all about. This hunter truly deserves this amazing trophy buck! He and his family spend countless days, weeks and months down in this area…looking and scouting all year long. Great job man…hope this brings a lot of good things your way!

Hey Evan,
Actually the photo that is posted on those sites is actually of another buck taken by Brad Roberts on the Beaver. This is another amazing archery typical Utah buck that is probably going to break the current state record as well. However, it is not the same buck that I am referring to in this post. I am talking about another buck altogether. Wow, two great typicals so far!

Brad is right, these guys are hunting fools. A friend of mine who called me about this buck, can’t wait to see it, it’s really massive. I heard over 50″ of mass, WOW! I used to live in Emery County and know these guys, they get a lot of big bucks. Do a story about these guys ( I think they are all family members) maybe you can figure out where their secret hunting spots are, lol.

Guys,
Congrats to the hunter, an AWESOME buck, on public land, general season unit. Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife and the dedicated members have spent 10 years, millions of dollars, and countless miles, phone calls, and meetings to restore deer herds and quality hunting on Utah’s great public lands.
We encourage every Utah sportsmen to get involved to address that challanges facing wildlife, wildlife habitat and sportsmen in the coming years.

PS. David, you wrote an article about the average hunter having his day, the current managment system now lets the average guy have his day, and Evan, thanks for being part of getting SFW going

I just got back from Utah and a friend I met there showed me the buck you are talking about in his phone and it’s truly a giant.
You are right Dave the Buck in the B&C is not the buck I seen a pic of. This buck is wide and long with huge mass.I can not wait to see this buck in photo’s. I did see a few bucks that would of given this buck a run while I was in hunting they are out there. Thanks Mike Pritzl

Congrats brady on a buck of a lifetime. After spending alot of time and money scouting, buying the best equipment, and lots of practice. You have accomplished something many only dream about. You make me proud because of your hunting ethics. Some might say you took this deer in a improper manner.Thats to bad.If they new you the way i know you. They wouldnt say the things they do.You deserve respect because you are a very patient hunter.Your hard work payed off. There has been alot of rumors going around about the buck you killed.I guess that is expected. When you take a trophy like yours.I wouldnt know for sure ive been hunting 24 years and havent had that privilage. The only down fall for you is now you have to find a bigger buck to top the one you got. Good luck.
