Kansas Boy Attacked by Mountain Lion

September 10th, 2007 David King - King's Outdoor World

For years Kansas Wildlife and Parks officials have declined to admit that there are actually mountain lions within the state of Kansas. Many people have apparently seen them, or seen their tracks and scat, but officials have never given in until they actual see a carcass.

On September 7th, 17-year old Wabaunsee High School senior Wayne Flerlage is sure they do. Wayne, an athlete and frequent runner, was out on a late night run east of Alma. On his way back home, he was attacked from behind when a mountain lion jumped on his back and knocked him down. Quick on his feet, Wayne gathered himself to find that he was face to face to what appeared to be a mountain lion. Wayne struck it in the face and kicked and the cougar slowly retreated back into the bushes. Wayne reported the whole experience to Wildlife Officials and has the scratches to prove it. Are there mountain lions in Kansas?

Yes, for a fact, # 1, 15 years ago my grandma, aunt, Case Walker, Ryan Walker and I where walking on our hill and we watched one for 15-20 minutes seting on the side of a hill when it stood up streched out and walk away. # 2 1995 My best friend TC and I where out driving looking around when a young one ran across road in front of us. #3 found doe kill, cat sign all over, was a big doe covered up with large brush. No Bobcat did this. #4 found track and had a man that goes to CO, NM, and AZ hunting them all the time. He said it was for sure a Mountain lion track. #5 My neighbor and i where in the hay field when on came out and then ran back in to the brush. That neighbor said he had seen one 11 times. Have had many friends, neighbors and hunters say they have seen one with in a mile of our farm. One hunter said it came out and played in the field like a little citten. All the ones I have seen have all had long tails with a black tip. And all of them where huge except for the baby and it was about the size of a large bobcat but had a 4 foot or so long tail. We live in the Cedar Vale Ks area.
