New Oregon State Record Archery Buck
September 12th, 2007 David King - King's Outdoor World
Just another great velvet typical archery mule deer from the 2007 season. This time we move over and give some props to Oregon. There was a beautiful mule deer taken that looks like it will easily take the state record typical in the velvet category and likely to surpass the overall state record. Green score on this buck is an awesome 198 4/8 net typical P&Y. With about 13 inches of total deductions (there is also a small kicker on the left G4) this buck gross scores about 212.
I’ll keep you posted on the official score when it is available and maybe a pic if I can. Thanks to Wade for the heads up on this one.
UPDATE (10/31/07) - Rob McKibbin has just got his buck officially scored. The official results are 202 5/8 gross and 192 4/8 net typical. As of right now Rob’s buck was the new state record archery velvet typical mule deer (see below). I will keep this post active as we find out more from these other potential record archery bucks from Oregon and see if this changes.

Rob McKibben and his Oregon Archery velvet typical mule deer from 2007 scoring 202 5/8 gross and 192 4/8 net P&Y
So how does this rank. Doing some research, it looks like the prior Oregon state record for velvet typical mule deer is 186 0/8 taken by Richard Marks in 1995. The hard-horned state archery record is 195 7/8 taken by Gidion Jackson back in 1990. The #2 buck is 193 3/8 P&Y taken in 1996.
UPDATE (11/14/07) - Thanks Kim for the update. It looks like Nick Mickelson just got his velvet typical archery mule deer scored yesterday. The official results are 207 gross and 194 7/8 net P&Y. He had some abnormal points that contributed to the 13 1/8-inches of deductions. What a buck! So here we go. Nick just surpassed Rob as the new state record velvet typical archery buck. We’ll see if he can hold the top spot for a bit.

Nick Mickelson and his Oregon Archery Velvet Buck scoring 207 gross and 194 7/8 net P&Y. This is a pending new state record velvet archery typical mule deer.
New state record archery velvet NON-TYPICAL buck has also been taken in 2007. For those of you who have kept up on the comments to this post have learned of Chris Dunlap’s new velvet record Oregon buck with an official score of 231 1/8 gross and 225 3/8 net non-typical P&Y as a 11×13 point. What a year for Oregon bowhunters in 2007.

Chris Dunlap with his new Oregon Archery State Record Velvet Non-typical Mule Deer which scores 231 1/8 gross and 225 3/8 net P&Y.
I would like to thank everyone for making this post so successful. Due to your help we have been able to track down the best from Oregon this year and allow everyone access to the most accurate information. I have photos from Rob, Nick and Chris. I am going to be running the stories on all three of these great record bucks in our next issue of Hunting Illustrated Magazine rightfully titled our “Best of 2007″ issue. Because of everyone’s help on tracking these bucks down, I think I will go ahead and post the photos from all three bucks on this post.
So…is this it for Oregon velvet archery records from 2007? Not so fast!
I believe there is still one more typical buck out there that could still mix things up a bit. It has not been officially scored yet, but I have seen a photo and there is no question it could net score in the 190’s. It is not very wide, but tall. Until I can get full permission and get a chance to actually talk with the hunter, we will have to wait it out a bit on this buck before I can do any more…

I know a lot of people are waiting to hear more about this buck. I just talked with the hunter again today. Thought I would give you an update.
Until I get some more things worked out…no pictures to post yet. Be patient.
An update on the score: The 60 days is getting close but not yet for the official score. However, it has been green scored again and a closer score that I believe is more accurate than what was posted originally is 204 gross and 193 4/8 net typical P&Y.
The buck has some great, deep backs. Very nice buck. I’ll post more when I can.

21. Rob | October 30th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
Oregon typical velvet #1…. I think is 186 and change (net P&Y). For the country… P&Y maybe 205 net? Pending the results from this year and what I have heard this could all change.
22. kls | October 30th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
i have seen pics of these two and they are more than impressive. there was also another buck killed that was right at 186 as well! impressive to say the least
23. Nick | October 30th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
My buck was shot on Sept 4. and my scorer wont be back from vacation until the 13th. I can’t wait to see everybody’s results. I don’t wanna post a picture until my score is official. 24. Kim | October 30th, 2007 at 11:46 pm
Dennis, #19 I was with Nick the day he shot his HAWG too…. Congratulations to both Rob AND Nick on their monster bucks!. I cant wait for Nick to post his official score and pic…. believe me, ITS INSANE! When i took his bucks head to the taxidermist, he said he could of swore it was an elk i was bringing in. Nick is 6′3 and 250 lbs…funny thing is, holding his bucks antlers. Nick looks like a 100 pound 12 year old. I’m telling ya, this thing is HUGE! Cant wait till both pics are posted!
GREAT job to the both of you!

Great Job Rob!!!
I heard you are a 3D champ as well, great job on your Archery Success. It sounds like you really have a great spot for bucks, the rest of use will be in the Upper Descutes Canyon. Unless you need a extra partner, I single and I look really good in camo!
27. Nick | November 1st, 2007 at 10:13 pm
13 more days!!! What an Exiting event, I’m glad that there is more than just one buck thats gonna top the charts it makes this whole waiting game very exiting!!! HAWG vs. HAWG will 192 do the job! We’ll just have to wait and see.
28. DENNIS | November 2nd, 2007 at 9:37 am
192 AND 4/8 VERY IMPORTANT
29. Kim | November 2nd, 2007 at 3:43 pm
Will Rob be waiting to post his picture of his buck at the Grand Finale on November 13th or will he be posting it sooner? I cant wait to see both of these Record breakers together. Has anyone ever said whereabouts Robs buck was shot??? I was wondering if both of these huge deer were taken in the same area. That would be interesting! OR is that top secret information ? : )
30. Kim | November 2nd, 2007 at 3:59 pm
You are right Dennis ! cant forget that 4/8ths. Not quite sure its going to do the job, but weirder things have happened. Like the guy that got the buck that scored a 186 this year and missed the record by a meezley 0/8. You just never know. But no matter what the ending results are, you should ALL be proud.
31. Rob | November 3rd, 2007 at 12:19 pm
Dave has my pictures and I will leave it up to him when to post them. Where did I shoot my buck? Morrow County. Nick… fill us in, we are wondering about some littile info on your deer….how many points, spread ext. Oh.. no offense intended but Kim #24. If your taxidermist thought it was an elk, are you sure you want him to mount it?….you may get a bugleing deer.
32. Bonnie | November 3rd, 2007 at 9:14 pm
LOL Rob…. I think what Kim meant when the taxidermist thought Nicks buck was an elk, is that the antlers were THAT big ( No doubt he was being sarcastic.. . BUT WAIT! Maybe he really shot a deer in elks clothing.. DOH!
33. wade ferguson | November 3rd, 2007 at 10:37 pm
Ok , I will tell you where Rob Shot his Buck,,,,,, Right behind the sholders, Rob tell them what your buck weighed, see if they can figure that one out.

Hey Rob it;s a 6 x 5 the rest is top secret!
35. Casey | November 5th, 2007 at 9:04 am
Rob,
I live in morrow county. did you kill him in the south side .. I would imagine as all of the north end is private. i guess most of the south end is as well.
I am guess that this buck was shot off of a farm some where. dont get me wrong i do not mean deer farm i mean a working wheat ranch or a regular farm, also in morrow county there are big tree farms which tend to hold everything from big bucks to big bulls, bear and cougar.
Really curious wich part of the county this thing came out of..
36. DENNIS | November 7th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
HI CASEY IF YOU DO LIVE IN MARROW COUNTY THERE ARE BIG BUCKS IN YOUR BACK YARD. IT LOOKS MORE LIKE YOU ARE FISHING FOR MULE DEER THAN HUNTING THEM FROM YOUR OTHER COMENTS. ROB AND I HAVE HUNTED THESE SPOTS THE LAST FOUR YEARS. GO AS FAR SOUTH AS YOU CAN THEN COME BACK NORTH A LITTLE. KNOCK ON SOME DOORS AND START SCOUTING.GOOD LUCK.
37. DENNIS | November 7th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
DAVE LETS SEE SOME PIC OF ROBS BUCK.
38. Casey | November 7th, 2007 at 3:55 pm
dennis,
Just to let you know we have a family farm that borders a federal refuge on the north end of the county and there are some very big bucks on our farm occasionally. I have killed a couple nice bucks on our farm with my bow. in the 160’s.
I was just curious with the new record archery mule deer being killedd in the county it just struck my curiosity. I do know that the southern part of the county is closed to archery hunting. so i was just curious where else people archery hunt in the county besides the tree farms. nothing personal man.
39. Kim | November 7th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Casey- Even though the buck taken in Marrow County did break the Last state record, Its still too early to claim the New “Top” State record was taken there. My guess its going to be Deschutes County who is going to be taking the #1 spot. Ive heard that the score could be closer to the 200’s… AND THATS A “NET” SCORE ! Until a buck is officially scored by P&Y, you just never know.!
40. Casey | November 8th, 2007 at 9:14 am
I am just exitedd to see that there are big bucks coming out of oregon no matter where they come from …
And just so everyone knows it is MORROW county.
41. DENNIS | November 8th, 2007 at 10:22 am
KIM THE P&Y PAPER WORK HAS BEEN SENT IN SO IT IS THE BIGGEST FOR A LITTLE WHILE. GOOG LUCK ON YOUR FINLE SCORE. I THINK ITS FUNNY YOU AND I CHAT FOR ROB AND NICK. HAVE A NICE DAY. READ YOU SOON.
42. chris | November 9th, 2007 at 9:18 am
congraultions every one on your great bucks i just want to let you all know there is also a new non typical velvet mule deer killed this year it official scored 231 1/8 gross and 225 3/8 net he is 11×13 and weighed about 320 lbs live weight. it was a hawg for sure. he got officaly scored on the 8 th.
43. chris | November 9th, 2007 at 10:08 am
nick and rob, how much did your bucks weigh? my non typical buck was taken not to far from where you took yours nick. at least that is what some of the local people i know are telling me. (they claim to have seem your buck and spoken to you). congragulations those are beautifull buck. rob i have seen pictures of your at a local archer shop in portland. i shot mine on sept 8th but i had missed this buck on august 27th. a 2nd chance is a rare thing and i got very lucky. what a great year for velvet mule deer. i have heard rumors of a 240 inch non typical taken in the paulina unit but as of yet the guy has not showed up everytime he said he would to have it officaly scored.
44. wade ferguson | November 11th, 2007 at 10:57 pm
Ok, Supposely their is four more bucks in Oregon that are over 200 typical net Archery, I saw pictures of two and they definatly look like 200 class bucks. Has anyone else caught wide of all these big bucks? Oregon must of had a huge horn growth year!
45. chris | November 12th, 2007 at 6:19 pm
i did see pictures of another typical buck at the salem sportsmans warehouse that would appear to be a sold 180’s to 190’s buck but know one knew who the person was and any info on it. other then that, i have not heard of any other big bucks. just the one non typical that the guy is telling people is a 240 buck. david has pictures of my 225 non typical.
46. Kim | November 13th, 2007 at 3:47 am
Casey #40
Where the heck is MORROW county anyway? Is it somewhere by the Portland area? Hood River? Is it a small place, cuz ive never heard of it until this year. And your right, its pretty neat that so many huge muleys have been taken in Oregon this year, breaking the old state record or at least coming close to it. Maybe there was steroids in all of our rain water last year. : )
47. Kim | November 13th, 2007 at 4:33 am
Dennis #41
yep! it is kinda funny isnt it? Either Rob and Nick dont like to talk much… OR we like to talk TOO much. : ) Nick gets his Buck officially scored Tuesday evening, hopefully that will get him talkin.
Wade- About the 4 bucks you are talking about on comment #44 got me wondering…. How long do we have to wait to find out who REALLY has the state record? Does P & Y have a deadline for official results to be entered for each catagory each year before they can say? Do you know how that works?
Dennis- Ive seen where you’ve asked Dave to post a pic of Robs buck. Has that been done yet? I didnt know if i have been looking for it in the wrong place or not.
Chris- Congrats on your nice Muley! Is your score of 225 a net score or gross score? Either way, its a sweet score. SInce Dave does have a picture, hopefully he will post it soon for us to see. There seems to be a few pictures we are ALL dying to see. I think Dave likes keeping us all in suspense. : ) just kiddin Dave!
Chris- Nick didnt get his buck weighed, so we have no idea. When we skinned it, we couldnt believe how much fat it had though. This thing would of made the obesity charts.. It was definately all geared up for winter. Nick got his deer up Three Creeks, right outside of Sisters, did you get yours around that area too?
48. Casey | November 13th, 2007 at 11:35 am
Kim,
Morrow County is a big county that runs from the comlubia rive south. It includes heppner, Boardman, Irrigon. Not any big towns. I think the biggest is Boardman.
Most of Morrow County is private lands. such as irrigation farms, tree farms, and in the south part lots of wheat ranches. But in the south part of the county there is no archery hunting. And in the north part of the county there is very little public land to hunt on mostly state run refuges that allow archery and shotgun hunting. This is why i am so curiuos to where this buck was shot.
We own a 6000 acre farm on the north side of the county wich borders a federal refuge with some of the biggest bucks i have ever seen.. but these bucks are smart and stay on the refuge. However my wife and i have killed some good bucks that have wonderd over on to our farm.. i killed one that was in the 160s with my bow and she shot her first buck wich scored 150s….
49. Kim | November 13th, 2007 at 1:33 pm
Casey- Thanks for that information! Does Morrow County have a late season over there? We only have an early season hunt over here where we live so we have to head West on the other side of Hoo Doo if we want to do any late hunts. So that makes it go from hunting Muleys in early season to hunting Blacktails in lthe late season. Ive shot 5 Mule deer with my bow, but dont have any blacktail under my belt yet. Does Morrow County consist of both species of deer or are Muleys the main population over there? Ive never seen any Blacktail in our neck of the woods, and if i did they would probably be a bench leg ( the cross between a mule deer and blacktail) which ive heard are illegal to shoot but not sure if its true or not. I would find it pretty hard to pass up a monster buck just because it was a cross breed. It makes me wonder what category they would put them under… blacktail OR muledeer? If they ARE illegal to shoot, maybe thats the reason why.
Nick gets his Buck scored TONIGHT by P&Y so we should be hearing the results soon!
50. Casey | November 13th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Kim,
Morrow county mainly lies in the columbia basin unit. You can look at a synopsis and see what i mean.. there is only one early season, the late season hunts are all doe hunts. i have heard rumor that they will put in some late season tags next year… we will see
51. chris | November 13th, 2007 at 3:46 pm
dennis,
i did get my buck about 10 miles from where nick shot his. and i know what you are talking about as far as the fat thing goes, my buck had atleast 1 inch of fat covering his body he was a pig for sure. they must be expecting a hard winter with that much fat. my bull from this year on the other hand had very little fat on him and he was not to far from where i shot my buck. the 225 is net and 231 gross.
good luck nick on the scoring tonight!!!
52. DENNIS | November 13th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
KIM UPDATE NICKS SCORE WED MORNING. WE ARE ALL WAITING TO HERE. P.S I HAVE SEEN PIC OF NICKS BUCK ON MONSTERS MULEYS IT LOOKS VERY LARGE. GOOD JOB NICK BIG AND FUZZY LOTS OF MASS.
53. Rob | November 13th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
Hey,
Yeah I don’t talk much….Hellen Kellar type…lol ! Good luck on your scoring tonight Nick…. Hope it does make the 200 in net, that would be unreal. To shoot a buck with a bow that will net 200 in typical is an amazing acomplishment…heck! Most people haven’t even seen a buck that big in the wild let alone sneak within bow range and place an arrow in the hopper. Good luck and may the tape measure be forgiving.
Caesy,
I would love to give you a better idea of where I am hunting but to be fair… we are online…I don’t want a parade in my hunting spot next summer? I am sure being you live in the area you already have got a good idea.
54. Kim | November 14th, 2007 at 11:37 am
Hi Guys… Nick doesnt get internet in his new house until this week, so this is the info i got from him this morning about his Official scoring yesterday.
After 13 1/8 inches of deductions, the results were
“207″ Gross
“194 7/8″ Net
A month ago, his UN-official P&Y score was 200 net, 210 gross if that gives you any idea how things can change.
SO……….. “194 7/8″ NET IT IS !
55. Kim | November 14th, 2007 at 12:04 pm
ROB and DENNIS-
Since Rob and Nick will be in the record books, our understanding is that once you get your official P&Y score, you send your antlers to the P&Y “PANEL” and they do another official scoring. If the ” Panel” score is higher ,they will give you the higher official score. And if the Panel score is lower they let you keep your first Original P&Y official score. Do you guys know anything about that???
56. Kim | November 14th, 2007 at 12:14 pm
ROB- IS THERE ANYWHERE THAT THE PICTURE OF YOU AND YOUR BUCK IS POSTED SO WE CAN ALL SEE YET ??????
57. David King - King's Outdoor World | November 14th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Kim,
Maybe to help answer your question on the Pope and Young panel scoring (comment #55), you don’t necessarily have to have a panel score to be a state record. However, if the buck is one of the biggest within that recording period P&Y may invite you to their next panel.
If you do go to the panel they will re-score the buck. If in fact they come up with a higher score, that will then become your new official score. But there is a chance that if the score is lower they may override your previous score and knock it down. I have seen it go both ways with different bucks and bulls that are sent to panel and some they will just keep the same score. No guarantee there. However, I think that if the panel score is within a certain percent (1-2%) of the entry score, they will just stay with the original entry score.
Hope this helps.

NICK CONGRATS 194/78 IS AWSOME AND 207 GROSS GOOD JOB . WE SHOULD ALL GET TOGETHER AND TELL HUNTIMG STORIES ROB AND I LIVE IN THE VALLEY YOU MUST LIVE CLOSE TO BEND.I DON”T KNOW WHERE CHRIS LIVES.
59. chris | November 14th, 2007 at 5:46 pm
i live about 4 miles from salem. congrats to all !!!!!!! i do not think oregon will have a year like this again for some time but we will have to see that hunting you just never know. i also think there is an additional buck that even david has not seen that will score well mabye not a good a nick and robs but it should be close to the 190’s the pictures are at the salem sportsmans. it looks to be about 28 to 32 inches wide with deep fronts and pretty good back forks and good bean length. i have no other info on it then that i just admired the pictures for awhile and asked around but know one could give me any more info. so we will have to see what happens.
60. DENNIS | November 14th, 2007 at 7:40 pm
DAVE… I KNOW OF TWO VERY BIG BUCKS SHOT NEAR LONG CREEK. 1 NON TYPICAL 1 TYPICAL. VERY NICE FUZZY BUCKS . BIG BIG BIG LOTS OF MASS. IVE SEEN PIC COULD BE 190″S TYPICAL . 200+ ON THE NON TYPICAL.
61. wade ferguson | November 14th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Nick, what a Koob, those bucks were almost twins, great job you guys, way to put Oregon on the map. You guys just made the outfitters a lot more money. By the way thats some big shrinkage, reminds me of Dennis in a snow storm, It’s not what you think. He said he had stuck a big four point and when we got to the end of the blood trail it was a forked horn, In a half hour it lost 4 points and 80 pounds. Great to hear that Dave is going to be doing an artical. Dave, where do we subscribe for this magazine, just lately I saw one, It’s is one of the best one’s out their.
Rob, You or Dennis are now going to have whack that big one, that one will really put Oregon over the top, One good thing hes make babies.
Chris you to, that buck is unreal, his body is a pig, and that was the second chance, That’s some real huntin.
Only ten more months untill season starts!!!!!
62. Rob | November 14th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
Now lets take some of our money from all of the OUT-OF-STATE tag applications that may come of this and do some good with it. Talk hunting… I’m all about it. We need to get together…maybe at the OBH meeting. Also… may we be so blessed to be able to do this all again next year. Think about it…new record deer… for us “stick slingers”! Congrats to all and to all that still have a deer tag, stay warm, dry and dont bang you knuckles too hard with those antlers this weekend. Good luck!
63. Kim | November 15th, 2007 at 2:54 am
David -
Thanks for the helpful information about taking antlers to the Panel. It sounds like it could be risky! Personally is sounds even scary if they are able to reduce an Official Score.
If any person does has a record score, Does P&Y make it mandatory to have the Panel Re-score it before they will put it in the P&Y record book? Or are you saying its more of a choice a person has? And if it IS a choice and a person DOESNT want to take it to the Panel, Will P&Y still enter it in the record books anyway with the first Official Score given?
Thanks again for your help Dave!

LMAO on your comment about shrinkage Wade! ( Nice cover up) But it does bring up another question!
During the 60 day waiting period before an official scoring, does it make a difference in the shrinkage of the antlers if they are being stored in a freezer, or kept cold versus being stored in a warm place?

I see that Dave says there is another record archery muley in velvet out there taken in Oregon that still hasnt been officially scored yet that looks like its going to score in the 190’s. Woo Hoo! Is this getting even more exciting, or what? Oregon Muleys
“Rock” this year!

A lot of big bulls the last few years as well!
It’s Ok Dennis, you may want to stick to a warmer climate and hunt Whitetails, you get to count all their points.
Sounds like it could be the beginning of the Oregon Mule dear club, who wants to be president?
I look forward to the artical, your right it is a nice Magazine.
Great Jobs Guys!!!

What’s up fellow hunters, I just wanna say congrats to everyone, what a year! I was getting tired of all the big buck stories from Utah, Idaho, and New Mexico It’s Oregon’s turn way to go!!!

KIm #64…. What would make you ask that? But anyway here is your answer….
Here are the rules as per Pope and Young;
“An animal’s antlers or horns (or skull in the case of bear or cougar) must dry, at room temperature and normal atmospheric humidity in an unaltered state, for a period of at least 60 days after the date of harvest to be officially measured.”
I think it would make a difference… as they “cant dry” but whos to say?

I think i may of found a picture of the other Oregon mule deer record buck that Dave is talking about that hasnt been officially scored yet. There is a buck on some other website that has just been posted. It says it was shot in Eastern Oregon and the hunters name is Kyle Woollhiser. Its definately is a nice buck. This is more than likely the competition we are all waiting for to be scored. It doesnt look like its going to have many deductions.. its looks almost perfect on both sides. There looks like there might be a little deduction on one of the eye guards from what i can tell from the picture. The article doesnt have any kind of scoring on it yet. This picture is also posted at the Sportsman Warehouse here in Bend and has been rumored to have an unofficial score of 190.

Casey,
Dave mentioned in the very top updated article that he does have pictures from Rob, Nick and Chris, but is in the process of putting something together. Its hard to be patient isnt it? Ive been dying to see all the pictures too! : )

Rob (comment #69)
The reason i asked the question about the antlers is because Nick shot his buck Sept. 4th when it was still extremely hot here in Bend and his antlers were kept out in the hot environment and his antlers seemed to have shrunk quite a bit compared to when he had them unofficially scored the second time. I was just wondering if a person was to keep them in a cold place if the antlers would hold their size better. Just me being curious, thats all !

i just looked at the web site that the pictures of kyles buck are on and he is reporting it at 203 gross and 197 4/8 net. althought i have spoken to several measuers and non of them have heard anything from an offical measurer that they have looked at it or scored it. so i do not know if that score is offical or not.
