2007 Sportsman Tag - 42″ Mule Deer

2007 Utah Sportsman Mule Deer Tag - 42

Last week the Utah Sportsman Mule Deer tag holder ended up bagging a buck of a lifetime. Some friends were down horseback riding and kicked this buck out of the open flats. They stayed on it with their horses and the buck went into a box canyon. One of the guys rode three hours to get cell service and called their buddy, Rand Newby, that they had a huge buck spotted. Rand made the trip and they were able to locate the buck again and knocked it down.

This buck has tremendous width. It is 42-inches wide with 13 points on each side. Rough green scores have put this deer around the 234 gross non-typical mark.

Rand drew the lucky tag and also works for Christensen Arms. Rand was wearing our King’s ShadowCamo and was shooting a custom Christensen Arms Carbon Wrapped Barrel and the stock was dipped in our King’s Mountain ShadowCamo.

More pics and a story on this buck is posted on the Christensen Arms web site - Click Here

I wouldn’t just hang that buck on a wall but my rifle as well. Deer hunting just wouldn’t be as fun after that. I’d have to get into elk or moose hunting, maybe take up fishing or bowling. What an incredible buck and one sweet rifle. Congrats man!!!!

what the heck does his stock dipped in camo got anything to do with a trophy being run into exhaustion by horses and some pud running 3 hours to get cell coverage to wake some rich hunter up to come in and kill this buck………wow I wish I can grow up to be such a ethical hunter…….what kind of tires does his truck have? that is so important to killing big deer or any other commercial product you forgot to push which helped in taking this monster…? come on guys, cant anything be hunted without pushing some items anymore………I am sure this wont be printed but it makes me feel better.

    Tom (comment #4)
I hope posting your comment helped you feel better. I can understand the frustration sportsmen feel today and can sympathize with you.

The hunter you are referring to as “rich” is Rand Newby. An every day Joe hunter who was lucky enough to draw the Utah Sportsman Mule Deer Tag. This is NOT a high priced tag that was sold to the highest bidder. I don’t know the specifics of the horses and running the buck to death…I wasn’t there. But I did go and meet Rand and seems like a pretty cool guy that is down to earth and can’t believe he just killed a buck of a lifetime.

I can understand your problem with me including the fact that he was wearing our camouflage and shooting a gun dipped in our camo. I will be honest, this is our King’s Blog, so the reason for this blog is none other than plug our products and showcase our products as much as possible. We talk a lot about big bucks and bulls here on this blog. But that is a lot of what we do here at King’s - feature big bucks and bulls in our products and showcase them and the success of how all of this comes together.

I want to educate and showcase how our products work and how we are involved with the hunting industry. If this was on open forum, then yes this would be too much and inappropriate, but for a company blog I think it is appropriate.

Hope this helps, but I am always open to feedback and criticism as long as it is put together with some thought.

Dave - I agree with your comment below… This is the KINGS OUTDOOR WORLD blog. Therefore - I believe you are entitled to saying any amount of your products… I just shot a dang nice buck down on the Henry’s as is posted on the front page of Hunting Illustrated.( I say all that because of this point) - Had I not been wearing the Kings Desert Shadow camo, I know for a fact i wouldnt have had a 100 yard shot with a muzzeloader, and a lifetime memory..
Let the guy who made the comment go to some other blog. Congrats to the fine man who hunted the buck.. I dont care who you are - I’ve never seen a mule deer get tired of “running from horses” He obviously hasnt hunted enough… Nobody can control a Mule Deer…

    DAVE,
    COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT BETTER!!
I WILL SAY, THAT GROWING UP IN MONTANA,HUNTING
MY ENTIRE LIFE, ANYONE WHO STALKS AN ANIMAL
FOR MILES, ONLY TO GLASS WHATEVER IT MAY BE
GOING OVER THE TOP OF A RIDGE, THREE RIDGES AWAY,
IS NOT BEING HONEST, WHEN THEY HAVE SAID TO THEMSELVES, “SURE WISH I HAD A HORSE”. NOT ONLY
TO KEEP UP, BUT TO PACK OUT IF YOU’RE LUCKY
    CONGRATS, RAND.

I just don’t get it. Why is it every time there’s a post about someone bagging an awesome trophy someone has to cry fowl play. It’s always something… high fence, high priced, private ranch, army of guides, etc. Of course the guy that scores the choice tag and can afford a really good guide like Doyle Moss and others, or can afford to pay the fee at a private ranch has a huge advantage but why does that make it somehow wrong or any less of an achivement. There are many filthy stinking rich hunters out there. Do you see them with a state record every year? NO, it takes more than money. If it’s not tame or tied to a tree then it’s as good a kill as any other. I have a feeling that those who bitch and moan about the success of others are only limiting thier own success. It’s called Karma. Be ready for it.

    Tom #4,

Why so bitter…. Do you want a gun dipped in camo? You cant buy a hunting bow anymore unless some camo company has gotten there hands on it. If you prefer to use a leaf off the tree and a couple of rattle cans to “bling up your stuff”, so be it! Some of us want professoinal patterns. And running deer around on horses…. come on. Lets give someone the benefit of the doubt. I don’t care if it was Billy the Kid riding Seabiscuit… good luck catching a mule deer in open country. I thank the companys that promote and help our sport grow… I love new products… I love Camo… and thanks for advertising here or we would never find it.

I have to agree with Tom . This isn’t a very ethical hunt and sure was not earned. What has happened to the days of out smarting an animal and actually earning the right to take the life of an animal that was put here as a gift from the Almighty. Leave you cell phones , your high price camo, and your high price rifle at home and actually try hunting like a real man with out the aid of “buddies” and high tech gadgets. What did those steaks taste like from your deer Rand, they would taste alot better if they where earned. Happy Hunting

opps, i meant to say ” if they have not said”.
hope my point got across just the same.

Amen to what David King and Todd Houghton have to say about comment #4(tom kroll). I am personally a good friend of Rand and have enjoyed hunting with him. He told me drawing the tag was a 1 in 6900 something chance. He is not “some rich hunter”, but a good ole’ country boy who actually deserves a chance at a buck of a lifetime. This hunt was not what tom kroll made it out to be, but a great hunt involving friends and family support. The buck was not run to death. I say congrats to Rand for an awesome buck. Oh, and by the way, he has Cooper Discover STs on his truck.

WOW.THAT IS A FINE BUCK!IT IS AMAZING THAT BUCK DID NOT FEEL THAT SIXTH SENSE PRESSURE AND DISAPPEAR.I WOULD SAY THE PEOPLE INVOLVED MUST HAVE HAD A LOT OF RESPECT FOR RAND TO WANT HIM TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE HIM.A VERY VERY UNSELFISH ACT ON THIER PART.IT SAYS ALOT FOR THEM AS WELL AS RAND.HE MUST BE A DARN GOOD FRIEND AND HUNTING PARTNER.
