Grizzly Bear hit by truck

Let’s face it…I have hit a deer before and it is not fun. Now, can you imagine coming around a corner and seeing a Grizzly Bear in the headlights. Check out those claws! Here is some information about what happened:

Big bear-2007 Lincoln Road Bear, Montana

Take a look at this guy (estimated 750 - 800lbs). 12 years old - had been trapped and lip tattooed on Dupuyer Creek in 1996. DNA hair sample have been collected from him at a few locations both on the Front and in the Blackfoot the last couple years. Killed last night by a logging truck West of Lincoln on Hwy 200.

that is to bad. Wish this animal could have lived a full life or at least be a story to a hunter that is willing to work for him. I never like to see a trophy animal , rather any animal killed like this.
    To bad,

Dave, i like to know if you can get any more information about this bear? I heard a few rumors about it being a trouble bear and breaking into cabins around the Lincoln area. Also do you know if it will be brought to a taxidermist or what will happen to it now?

  • 4. David King - King's Outdoor World  |  November 3rd, 2007 at 1:00 pm

    George,
From what I have been able to find out, there was a grizzly bear causing problems and breaking into cabins in that area. They are taking DNA samples to do some testing to see if this in fact is the same bear. The FWP is saving the hide and skull for educational purposes so I don’t know if that means it is going to get fully mounted at a taxidermist shop or not.

The bear was hit about 3:45 a.m. and died on impact. The driver is ok, but his truck was heavily damaged.

i was working in lincoln at the time this happened. it was definetly the talk of the town. i also got to see some pictures believed to be the same bear alive. in the pics the bear was right outside of a local cabin. man he was huge. i can’t say for sure it was the exact same bear, but it looked like the same bear. he was outside of the cabin next to the garage door. propably looking for a hibernation place, ha just kidding. it is too bad that this bear had to die this way, but that is what happens when bears, or any wild animal, grows accustom to living alongside humans. also like to say to casey that hunting of grizzlies in Montana is illegal at this time.

Wow, what a brute! It would have been a nice trophy for someone, too bad he met his end like this. I agree I hate seeing any animal dead on the side of the road.

  • 7. BMC  |  November 5th, 2007 at 9:49 am

I LIVE 80 MILES FROM WHERE THIS BEAR WAS
SMACKED. ALL TO BE SAID IS, AH, DARN, WE
LOST A BEAR. INCIDENTLY, TWO MORE GRIZ WERE HIT
BY VEHICLES, (1 NEAR CONDON, 1 NEAR ESSEX),
ALSO 3 GRIZ SHOT BY HUNTERS(NOT SURE OF LOCATIONS)
MOSTLY, THE HOT SUMMERS, PROVIDE A POOR BERRY CROP
AND SCARCE FOOD SOURCE, COUPLED WITH MONTANA’S
“LET THE FIRES BURN” POLICY, DRIVE BEARS TO LOWER
ELEVATIONS, APPERANTLY, ROAD KILL IS ON THEIR DIET,
AND THE VEHICLE IS GOING TO WIN EVERY TIME.

  • 9. Lori  |  November 6th, 2007 at 7:28 pm

HUUUUUUGE!!!!!!!!! I hate to see that it died in the way it did but at least it was quick and it didn’t suffer. I hate to see a animal get hit on the road and it still kicking and yelling or crying in pain.

Can you tell me exactly where this Griz was killed? There are pics on the internet claiming it was in Colorado.

  • 14. carol  |  December 6th, 2007 at 7:00 pm

That definately was a huge Grizzly. It was nice to see the photos.
    My QUESTION??
WHY do people have to take something true and pass around the web and claim it happened in their area or state. It is circling in Wisconsin now that it was hit here on hwy 64 between Medford and Merrill, Wi. Supposidly it was chased by a pack of wolves and ran out in front of a logging truck.Saw nothing on the news. Tonight my sister called and said she seen something on the local news about it and that it was in Aug in Montana. Would love to know the details as to size, actual weight, and claw length and the Man’s name that hit it. I am thankful He was not seriously injured. I do have the photos off the web but was leary of the story. I am truly glad it is now known where it actually happened. Thank You!

since when do we have grizzly bears in wisconsin?

where can i find more on this story, we hunt in Merrill right off Lincoln Road.

  • 16. Tara  |  December 9th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

I just got an email with pictures saying the exact same thing as what Carol posted. I, also never heard anything about it. I didnt think we had Grizzlies in WI either. I live in Merrill. I immediatly searched the net for a story and couldnt find one. A friend from Montana showed me this site and now I can be rest assured that the email I recieved was fake.

As for the disposition of the bear–currently the town of Lincloln (in the area the bear lived in) and the University of Montana (school mascot is a grizzly) are requesting the the bear be given to them to display. The bear, by law can only be used for education and must carry a message of conservation because grizzlies are protected according to an article in the local newspaper. It weighed 830 pounds and was hit in October crossing highway 200 west of Lincoln, Montana

I just heard the news today. I heard it was in Wisconsin on 64 as well. If this bear is a grizzly, that can’t be true, but I don’t know the difference.

  • 19. Kathee  |  December 17th, 2007 at 11:38 pm

I believe there are mountain lions in WI (remember Wales several years back???and Up North), but I think griz are concentrated out here in the West (I’m in Pagosa Springs CO, now, having come out from Waukesha in 2K). It sounds exciting, buuttt…………

The most reliable information seems to be the Montana story. That area on/near the Rocky Mountain front is known to be crawling with griz. I’ve seen them not far from there. As for all those who posted and don’t know the identifying marks of a grizzly, consider the following (which are visible in this photo): front claws approximately 4-6 inches; concave face profile, rounded ears. All these are in contrast to black bears, whose front claws are approximately 1 inch long, whose facial profiles are straight, and whose ears tend to be a bit more pointed. Another identifying mark that is not visible in this photo is a grizzly trademark hump at the front shoulders. And since grizzlies are currently protected in Montana, this animal is not to be regarded as a trophy.

I live near Medford/ Merrill. Yeah someone changed some e-mail to say it happened in Lincoln County Wisconsin on Hwy 64 it was just a hoax

  • 22. Wisconsinite  |  January 7th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Oh the local news channel 9 originally Had that story of the bear being hit near Merrill but then had a story about the hoax. Alot of people got that e-mail

The latest guiding area to lay claim to this bear is near Lakelse Lake, Terrace, British Columbia. Seems everyone with a bear area sees the opportunity for some free advertising. When I heard it was in Montana I immediatly thought of the Flathead River which flows north near Glacier Park to the Crowsnest in B.C. In the mid 80s I was flying helicopter in the area on siesmic work and The University of Montana and University of B.C. were doing a bear study on the 20 mile portion of the Flathead in Canada. There were 125 grizzlies counted at that time in that area. The biggest collared was an 800 lb. male. One night the T.V. signal went all haywire in camp and when we went out to investigate a griz was scratching his ass on the dish.

Thanks to your web site we cleared this Wisconsin story up. It hit me today in Pa. came home not beleiveing grizzly bears in Wisconsin.

  • 25. Raven  |  February 12th, 2008 at 4:50 am

The bear was definitely killed near Licoln, Montana. You can find an expanded story and additional close up pictures at Grizzly bear killed by truck in Montana

The distinctive identifying feature of a grizzly is the hump on the shoulders, black bears don’t have a hump. You can’t mistake it, it’s quite prominent. Also grizzly bears are at least a third taller and heavier than black bears. Claws on a black bear are about 2-3″ but on a grizzly they are about 4-6″

Some place I read an artical about this Bear. It was going to be mounted, there were three taxidermist that was going to work on it. There was a measurment of the hide, seems like it was 8′5″
squared. Wish I had that artical. Any way you look at it that was an Awesome Bear in life and now in death.
