Mountain Lion Attacks Kalispell Hunter
November 17th, 2007 David King - King's Outdoor World

A Montana hunter was out hunting last Sunday, hiking along a trail, when he heard a scream. That scream was from a mountain lion because a short time later he heard a growl right behind him. He turned and was 10-15 feet from the cougar. He turned to get behind a tree when the big cat jump him from behind. He shredded his backpack (which saved him from further damage). The hunter was able to reach for a gun and shoot, scaring the mountain lion away.
He shot several more times and eventually got help from some other hunters in the area and made it to the hospital. Outside of some scratches and cuts that required stitches he is fine.
This is a good lesson…if you encounter a mountain lion, never turn your back. And especially don’t turn your back and run. This kicks in the animals instincts. Easy for me to say. I have never been 10 feet from a lion looking to jump me…

This was one lucky hunter. He definately should have turned, faced the lion and ATTACKED! Yell, charge, shoot or club a cat that has decided you are prey…
The life you save could be your own.

Sounds like Oregon… with the falling of hound hunting the Big Cats have been top of the food chain again. Seems as they have lost there fear the last few years. Thanks to the liberals in Portland for that one for voting that in. Good luck stay safe!

Scary stuff! I think it would be incredibly hard not to turn and run. I was camping in the serengeti (tanzania) recently and there was a lion in our campsite. They’re pretty tame over there as they’re so used to people but it was still a pretty terrifying experience!

Rob #2, you aint kidding! I’m an Oregon bowhunter and every since they banned hunting with dogs I’ve seen cougars everywhere. It use to be a rare sight, but now I see them every year. Last year I had one charge me at night right in a state campground! (Anson Wright) Yea, I turned and ran… but I only had to make it 5 steps to the camper. Actually I think I made 10 steps in just two leaps. It was a close call. The next night it stalked my brother the 100 yards or so back from the showers. The year before I was chasing a spike elk over a ridge top. I stopped and cow called a few times, then noticed movement to my right. I spun around to see a cougar 30 yards away crouched on a dead log ready to spring. When I realized I left my pistol in the truck, I yelled and waved my arms and it slowly moved away. I’ve heard similar stories from just about every Oregon bowhunter I run into out there. And no, they do not have any fear of humans. This year I found two elk and one deer carcas in one small canyon. From the signs it was all kitty. More cats means more carcasses. Do not bow hunt in Oregon without a pistol backup or the next carcass could be yours!
