Levi and Tod with Montana Mule Deer

Have a great story to share. Levi, our CEO here at King’s, and Todd, head of Sales, went off to hunt mule deer in Montana recently and came back with this nice buck. It was a tough hunt, but Todd took the brunt of it as he had quite a unique experience. The photo above was taken shorty after this experience and he is holding it in pretty good as his ankle at this point is pretty messed up.

I will let Todd relate in his own words what happened:

Do I have an amazing story for you. I attached a picture of a buck Levi and I shot in Montana last week. We got up to this buck and he was still alive. We gave it 15 minutes or so and he finally expired (we thought). We proceeded to position the buck and did a 6 to 7 minute interview with the video camera. After we got done I wanted to take some still shots but we needed to turn the buck around so I could get him skylined.

I grab his rear legs and Levi had him by the antlers. We rotated him 180 degrees. I was on my knees tucking his rear legs under him and all of a sudden, Levi said, “Toddy watch out”. I turned and the buck stood up and proceeded to drive me into the turf. I had my backpack on (luckily) as he hit me square in the back with his antlers and landed on top of me racking his antlers into my back from left to right. I was tucked and blown away this buck was taking me. After about 7 or 8 seconds he stiffened up and fell of me. I left my right ankle up the hill as I went down. We were back in about two and half miles. I had to get my pics taken, after which we took my boot off. I thought my outer leg bone had gone through my boot, is how it felt. It didn’t look broken so I cinched up the Danners, grabbed Levi’s bipod and off I went. I made it back to the truck by about 8:00 PM. The guys were great. We headed out and left our buddy Travis there to cape him out. he got down just after us.

Wow! Now that’s something I’ve never seen! Crazy that he let them sit there and do an interview and everything for so long. Guess it pays to take extra care in making absolute sure the animal is dead! Glad it didn’t turn out any worse than it did!

If he was still alive when you got up to him, why not put a finishing shot in him instead of waiting 15 minutes and to think he had expired. Bullets are cheap.

I love stories like this. Would’ve been better if the bull had grabbed your rifle and ventilated your midsection a couple times. :)

Look for the “dead eyes” before ever trusting an animal to be dead. You can tell if they still have a gleam in them.
