First Archery Pronghorn Antelope

Brad Bentley and his Utah Pronghorn Antelope
Brad Bentley just sent me a great photo of his recent pronghorn antelope hunt. Our King’s Desert Shadow Camo was the trick. If any of you guys are hunting antelope, Desert Shadow was born to hunt antelope!

Here is Brad’s quick rundown of his hunt. Congratulations Brad on a great archery buck.

“It was officially opening day of the 2009 archery season here in Utah. Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to draw a limited entry Antelope tag. Yesterday I had the opportunity to fill that tag, by harvesting my very first Pronghorn Antelope. I drew for the most coveted antelope unit in the state, located in the beautiful red-rock high desert of the San Rafael Swell!

I was fortunate enough to share this special accomplishment with my dad, who was sitting beside me in the ground blind. After setting up and being in place well before sunrise, unfortunately after several hours with little activity…other than squirming and hopping frogs in the water, both my dad and I were falling victim to a persuasive mid-morning nap, and almost missed our opportunity!

With my dad “sawing logs” and my head bobbing in and out of a sleepy daze…I opened my eyes and out of nowhere found a buck standing at the edge of the water! Although this wasn’t the 80-inch buck that my good friend and I had spotted just days before, I got a little too excited and took a shot without hesitation on this buck at just 30 yards from the ground blind! My shot placement was a little high in the shoulder and it took this buck quite awhile to finally go down, we tracked him for while a second arrow eventually helped make the decision a little easier for him! Regardless of the fact that he’s not the big one I had my heart set on…I’m still happy I was able to fill my first antelope tag, and experience this new aspect of hunting with such good friends and family.

The buck only gross scores 62 inches and is kind of a “dink” especially by trophy standards…however I think taking an antelope with a bow is quite an achievement, regardless of size. I sincerely can’t wait to try this again the next time I ‘m lucky enough to draw…hopefully I’ll have the patience to wait it out a little longer and take that trophy buck of a lifetime. “

I agree, getting anything with a bow is a huge achievement. Nice job! Great looking animal. Thanks for the post.

Great buck! Congrats! Ground blind hunting this time of year over water can be like sitting in an oven. I’ve fallen victim to the sleepiness as well. I started doing the spot and stalk thing a couple years ago and came up with an idea of becoming a decoy and designed and developed what is now the SpeedGoat Hat & Shirt combo. It works GREAT! Last weekend with absolutely no cover I closed the distance on 9 does and a buck from 135 yard down to 60 yards before they trotted off and stopped to check me out again. I was literally walking slightly hunched over. Not rutting at the time there was no reason for the buck to challenge me. I think this product is going to be a great addition to all spot and stalk archery antelope hunters. The cool thing is there is nothing to carry. You wear the hat and shirt and it keeps your hands free and you’re able to move wherever you need to. Its pretty cool.
