Dallas Smith with his son enjoy the great hunt in 2009 for Boomerang, a 264 monster Idaho buck

Dallas Smith was very familiar with this monster mule deer, and in the fall of 2009 connected on this giant buck with his muzzleloader. This beautiful buck scores 264 gross and 261 2/8 net and would be a new Idaho State Record Mule Deer if the velvet was stripped.

Dallas was using King’s Desert Shadow Camo on his hunt, had great success, and took some amazing photos. Because of this Dallas is in the running for one of the winners in our King’s Camo Photo Contest. Hurry and get your photos submitted in as we are about to choose the winners for 2009.

One of the great mule deer taken in 2009 was the Colorado Governor Tag buck. This muley is a monster and scores 262 6/8 gross non-typical. He has a very pretty frame with long main beams and those awesome drop tines kind of seal the deal. Great buck.

There was a monster cactus mule deer taken recently in Oregon. This buck was taken with a muzzleloader. I just talked with a family member (his father) about the buck. They are waiting to get it SCI scored. Since it is in the velvet and also a cactus buck, Boone & Crockett will not accept it. Early score estimations have been 301 to 307 SCI. It has huge bases with a lot of junk and some drop tines, but the main frame is mostly a 2 point frame. Typical of big cactus bucks – horrible frame, but lots of points and drops.

This time of year is when the official scores start coming in for the big record elk that were taken in September. First big news is a new Utah state record archery typical elk. I mentioned this earlier, and this great bull was taken by Rick Crawford on September 6, 2009 on the Boulder Mountain. The green score came in at 405 3/8 gross and 391 6/8 net. This was going to be close as the current Utah State Record Elk with a bow scores 405 5/8 gross and 391 net P&Y taken by Aaron Cox in 2006.

Rick’s great archery bull has been officially scored by Pope & Young with a score of 408 4/8 gross and 392 5/8 net P&Y. Congratulations. So far, this is the highest net scoring bull I have heard about taken in Utah 2009.

There is an email going around with this above photo of a monster mule deer claiming it is 47″ or 48″ inches wide. This buck possibly being from Colorado or Utah and taken this year. Hmmm, so what is the truth?

There is no question this buck is a wide one, but how much truth about this buck do we know. Well, quite a bit. For many of you this might be old news, but since I have been forwarded this email quite a few times already, I figured it was time for a Big Buck Alert! post.

This buck was taken by Rand Newby in 2007 out of Utah. Rand drew the Utah Sportsman Tag permit and bagged him this spectacular mule deer. Rand works for Christensen Arms and the top photo (the one that is getting emailed around lately) shows Greg, one of his co-workers, holding the rack shortly after Rand shot it in October of 2007. This buck is 42-inches wide and scores around 230 gross.

Here is a link to the post I did shortly after this buck was taken back in October 31, 2007

We featured Rand’s great buck in the 2009 King’s Mule Deer Calendar. Casey Brooks with his 2009 Archery Elk

Casey Brooks just emailed me these photos of his monster bull elk he just took with his bow. I enjoy the phone call I get from Casey every year as he tells me about his trophy elk adventures for the season, then we shoot the breeze on the big bulls going down. Once again Casey has arrowed a great bull. Too many to count now when it it comes to big bulls taken with a bow. This year was no different as he took this bull elk on the last day after several days of hard hunting. The rut was tough this year for many and Casey gutted it out with this massive bull that scores 401 2/8 SCI.

The impressive thing on this bull in particular is the mass. This thing is a toad. The bases are like tree trunks and when you add it all up you have 72 5/8 -inches of total mass. You have to appreciate mass to really understand 72 inches. On average, a big bull will have 60-inches of mass. You get into the 65 plus and you are really heavy. But getting over the 70 inch mark is quite the accomplishment. And these are legitimate scores to boot.

Enjoy some pics of truly one massive bull.

How big do you think this buck is? Good backs, decent beams, average mass….I don’t know. Pretty unique. Camo doesn’t look too bad either.

Update: What is your guess on the score of this two point. I just found out and couldn’t believe it. Give me your thoughts and I will post the score in a couple of days.

Update: (01/11/10) Ok, so it has been longer than a couple of days. So let’s update this post with the score of the great 2-point buck and see how close some of you were. I am going off of gross score here. The big two-point buck taken in the photo above scores 153 2/8 gross.

Many of you were close, and some did a very good score breakdown. Remember, even though he is a two point, he still gets four circumference measurements. Add the main beams, inside spread and G2 measurements and you have a 150 class buck.

There was a great archery typical Arizona elk taken last month. It was taken by David Ledbetter and is a 6×6 typical. The bull has been unofficially green scored around 420 to 425 gross. David told me he may have about 20 inches of deductions. There is still some time before the 60 day drying period, but if the score holds and the bull can net score 400 inches or more, this could be a top 5 elk in the world for archery P&Y. More information to come, but keeping things pretty tight until the official score comes out.
