Incredible 287 Alberta Whitetail Buck!

An Alberta, Canada native just knocked down a monster whitetail deer about two weeks ago. From what I have been been told this deer is indescribable and kind of resembles the Hole In The Horn buck. It has been green scored at 287 gross and 280 net non-typical B&C.

From what I understand, the kid missed it last year, which they figured the buck was even bigger - pushing the 300-inch mark. Right now that green score puts it as the pending #1 in Alberta and #8 in the world. I will try and find out more and keep you posted on the official score when it happens.

UPDATE: A photo of this amazing buck has now been posted on the Wild TV web site. Hunter Helgie Eymundson of Alberta is the lucky hunter. What an incredible deer!

307 B&C Colorado Monster Buck

Kyle Lopez with his 307 B&C Colorado Mule Deer
Kyle Lopez with his 307 7/8 gross Colorado monster mule deer

Some of you may have already seen this photo of this incredible buck flowing around emails and message boards. Is it true that a legit 300-inch non-typical mule deer buck was roaming the hills in 2007? Apparently there are a few bucks still around that you would think only happened in the good old days of mule deer hunting. Another example is the 307 inch sheds that Landon Wittwer picked up in Arizona.

This monster buck was taken by 14 year old Kyle Lopez of Colorado in November of 2007. He was hunting with his father when they came across this buck. Kyle knocked it down, and at the time had no idea how big the buck was. When they walked up to the buck, they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Points everywhere!

I am excited to announce that you will be able to read the awesome story to this hunt in our next issue (Feb/March 2008) of Hunting Illustrated. You will also see Kyle’s buck in a future King’s Calendar.

Even though the buck still has until January 7th to be officially measured, Kyle’s dad Steed wanted to get a good, legit green score to have confidence in the score he was telling people. Roger Selner is an official measurer for Boone & Crockett and stopped by the Lopez home to score Kyle’s record buck. The green score is the following:

307 7/8 gross B&C
303 5/8 net B&C
207 0/8 typical frame
20×16 points
37 2/8-inch outside spread
100 7/8 inches of abnormal points

Stay tuned to this post as I will be keeping it up to date on the latest happenings and will post the official score as soon as it comes in.

So where does this rank?
The state record non-typical mule deer for Colorado scores 306 7/8. You would kind of think that the state record would be higher considering Colorado’s great tradition of mule deer. However, out of the 22 mule deer that are listed in Boone & Crockett that score 300 inches or higher, six of them are from Colorado (double any other state/province).

If Kyle’s score holds, it will be #5 for the state of Colorado and #19 in the world!

A Phantom Black Mule Deer Spotted

Black Mule Deer
Many of you have never even heard of a Black Mule Deer, let alone seen one. However, this recent photo taken in Winnemucca, Nevada showcases the rare occurence.

Mike Cox, big game biologist at the Nevada Department of Wildlife, has his own name for the phantom deer…he calls it a genetic alteration. It’s not quite as catchy as Tahoe Tessie, but it does explain things.

“It looks like it fell into an oil spill, but obviously we don’t have those in the middle of Nevada,” jokes Cox. “There are genes that map out the characteristics of an animal in its embryonic stage. Sometimes it’s a funky hoof, or a tweaked antler, or in this case the hairs of this mule deer are a different color than the normal mule. Sometimes there are recessive traits that are hidden in those genes that never see the light of day except for maybe one in a million, or one in two million.”

NDOW biologist Ed Partee states that black mule deer have been spotted before in Nevada.

“We have seen these black deer in the past in Humboldt County, mainly in the Jacksons, but we haven’t seen it for quite some time,” said Partee.

Cox reports that there appears to be nothing else out of the ordinary with the black mule deer doe other than its striking color.

“It’s definitely unusual. We may never see it again for a generation, or 50 years, or we may see it next year,” said Cox. “It’s almost like slot machines. You have to pull that slot machine a long, long time until you get the right combination, and that’s what happened with this melanistic mutation.”

Just as I was posting this, I received an email of another Black Mule Deer spotted. This one a buck mule deer. These photos show the buck in velvet and then after he has rubbed off. These are amazing photos. Apparently, it was spotted near Eagleville , California which is just northwest of Reno and the photos were taken September 2nd and 3rd of 2007.

Official Score in for 443 Utah Record Elk

I have posted on the monster 443 non-typical archery bull taken by Jimmy Ryan before - Here….and Here. The official score is now in. It looks like the green score held pretty good. The official score is 443 2/8 gross and 428 3/8 net non-typical P&Y.

That is big. This will shatter the state record archery bull, become the new overall state non-typical record for any weapon and is a pending #2 in the world non-typical archery bull for Pope & Young.

2 Elk Fighting…Fence Wins

Check out these amazing photos of two bull elk found on the side of the road in Dixon, Montana! These two bulls decided to fight through the fence. They removed 100 yards of fence. The big bull was 7 X 6. What a mess.

Video: 29-inch Mule Deer

Brent Wallace gave me a call on Saturday to see if he could stop by and have me take a look at his buck. He was hunting with a CWMU tag here in Utah and passed on some other nice bucks and finally settled on this buck. Good width, some trash and pretty 3-inch eyeguards will make this a nice wallhanger. He came in at 29-inches wide and scores 161 gross B&C.

Joel Eggers 211 Typical Archery Whitetail Buck

Joel Eggers Illinois 211 Archery Whitetail Buck

This could very well be the whitetail buck of the year as far as typical is concerned. Hunter Joel Eggers arrowed this monster 11-point Illinois buck in Randolph County on October 23rd. As you can see the deer’s body is huge and the rack is just as big. So far the unofficial green score comes in at 211 gross and 198 41/8 net typical P&Y. We’ll have to wait until the end of December to see how the official score pans out.

Joel is just 22-years old and had picked up the sheds to this buck and had been chasing it for the lasts couple of years.

This won’t be the Illinois state record, however, it will one of the top bucks in the state and very well could be the highest scoring net typical whitetail deer taken in 2007…we’ll have to see.

Video: Bowhunter Shoots Two Locked Bucks

Jim Willmsen emailed me his video he posted on this whitetail buck that he shot last week. One twist on the situation, though, was this buck was locked on to another buck that was already dead. Jim shot an 18-point buck deer Friday, October 26, 2007. The deer was dragging a second, 10-point buck, after the two deer had fought and their antlers had become irreversibly locked together. Willmsen talks about the deer, and the hunt.
